  • Hi Wendi

I'm not in quite the same position - I was diagnosed with Melanoma on Wednesday - still waiting to hear when the next round of tests and surgery will be (and what that will be). However, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your situation. Like you, I have good days and bad days (good hours, bad hours - it shifts all the time). I'm also finding managing other people's responses quite difficult.

I started a craft project to keep my mind occupied. Crochet and knitting squares to make a blanket. It's a repetitive task which requires concentration. I am actually finding it very helpful.

I hope you are finding support and comfort and I wish you all the best.

  • Hi Wendi, welcome to the forum but sorry you have been diagnosed with colon cancer. I too was diagnosed with colon cancer 7 years ago and I had a colon re-section surgery. Like you, I was terrified of the surgery. I got along fine with it and they thought they got all the cancer, but unfortunately they didn't, but that's a long story that I won't go into right now.

The surgery itself is a big surgery. In my case, I didn't have to have the outside pouch as the surgeon was able to re-attach my colon after taking out a large section. I recovered well from the surgery. I know everyone is different, but most people I know who had this surgery got along okay.

Come back to the forum and let us know how you get along with it. Good luck.

  • Hi Wendi - how are you feeling today? I'm sorry to hear about your chest infection - stress makes us more susceptible to infections. I hope it clears up soon. I'm finding a mix of responses - some people are very kind, others telling me what they think I should be feeling or doing and others who just don't seem interested or who say that melanoma isn't serious and why am I worried. I'm seeing a couple of friends today for nice walk (I live near the beach) and then lunch. Hopefully you have something relaxing planned for the remainder of the day. take care and keep in touch - will be thinking of you! katy xx
  • Hi Wendy I was diagnosed with bowel cancer when I was 40, that is 12 years ago. I was also told the cancer had already spread. The reason I am telling you this is because I hope knowing I have lived over 12 yrs with metastatic colon cancer will give you hope and help reduce your fear. I have had bowel, lung and liver surgery and quite a few other treatments including Chemo. Just remember you will be in good hands and there are so many more treatments available now. Look for the positive if you can, it helps. Please feel free to ask me anything you want. Jane x

  • Hi Wendi, I am in the same position .... diagnosed with colon cancer on 10 October, expecting a date for my resection surgery tomorrow when I see my consultant for the results of my CT scan. Bit anxious about the results of that just now , will be glad to get the appointment over and then make a start on whatever comes next . Good luck to you x
  • Hi Wendi Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in May this year and had major surgery at the end of June this year. My tumour had also perforated my bowel and attached to my bladder. Liver and lungs were clear. The surgeon managed to put me back together very well and I don't have a stoma bag. Recovery took 6 weeks and my friends and immediate family have been a great support. I am a very positive person by nature and take everything in my stride. This is what has really helped with everything, from dealing with the initial diagnosis, to recovering well and I am now just past the half way point of my chemotherapy. I'm having chemo every 2 weeks for 6 months. So 12 sessions in total. Yesterday I had my 7th session, so 5 to go!! Yay. My advise, for your post op recovery, is take whatever help your friends and family offer. I don't know your family circumstances, but i have 2 kids aged 12 and 18. The 18 year old was just starting his final A'Levels, so not great timing! One of my friends used: Take them a meal.co.uk This was amazing, it took the stress off my hubby to have to cook meals every night, whilst I was in hospital for 2 weeks recovering from surgery. 1 friend is in charge or organising the personalised page, and your other friend can post what meal they will make for your family. That way you won't get 5 lasagnes ! Please feel free to ask me any question at all. I know how worrying it can be. I wish you well. Keep us posted when you feel strong. Monica x
