Shock diagnosis.Bowel cancer spread to Liver.

My husband of 62 has just been told he has cancer of the bowed which has spread to the liver.

He has had CT and MRI scans and next week goes for. PET scan .

His GP thought he had an ulcer until the colonoscopy showed otherwise so it has come as a great shock. I have read that liver cancer is not curable and he has been told he may be offered chemotherapy.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer and what we can expect ? Has anyone survived this for any length of time..?

still sinking in and so many questions.

any help gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi , so sorry to hear about the diagnosis, i myself have been referred to the colorectal surgery team for suspected lower tract gi cancer after a negative ulcer querie, i have a ct scan and colonoscopy coming up, i also have referred pain in my back, ribs, and hip.

Secondary liver cancer can be dealt with depending on the staging i think, i have read positive things regarding that to total remission. best to take it as you get the news and see what can be done, best wishes to both of you. Good luck x

  • Hi

My partner was diagnosed with secondary liver cancer on 27.1.22 he then spent the next 8 days in hospital to underg liver biopsy, gastro and colon scopes. on 4.2.22 he was released from hospital having been told that he has colon cancer that spread to liv er and a duodenal ulcer.  He had not been to GP in 44 yrs hes never ill and only attended GP this time to have blood work done to attand eye clinic at request of optician.  His LFT;s displayed some way off results hence GP sending to hospital to be check out.

today we attened colorectal oncology clinic and feel as though we have been dealt another out of the blue forcast.  We know that his cancer was incurable, today we were informed that it is inoperable and can onl be treated with chemo.  Fine, but no, chemo will only happen if his liver results come back ok.  His eyes have started over the past 2 days to become yellow not a good sign.Dr has while waiting on results decided to try with a half dose of chemo next week as full results can take up to 2 weeks.  My partner is only 55, fit, healthy, has never smoked or drunk alcohol and had no symptoms that anything was wrong to indicate anything like this.  We are still grieving due to the untimely death of his mum and await hosptial investigations to conclude for this event. I am so lost as is he.

  • Hi all

My mum was unfortunately diagnosed with this awful disease yesterday and I'm still trying to get my head around it. This post has given me so much hope that things can happen.

how are you all doing now?

  • Hello

I am so sorry to hear about your mum but they can do so much now and I am positive they can help her as they did me.

I am doing very well, I have my 4 year scan in April and I am very positive that it will be clear.

Your mum obviously has a great support, keep positive, you can do this.

Take care and I hope all goes well with your mum.

  • My dad was diangnosed today with bowel cancer he already had an op for a stoma. And following CT scans he has lesions on the liver.

his oncologist is hopeful to the success of shrinking both tumors enough to remove them!

he starts chemo and radiotherapy in 2 weeks, he will have 3 months of this and then have a review.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, I hope all his treatment goes well for him.

I was diagnosed with the same thing in October 2017 and I'm still here to tell the tale, please stay strong and positive. If I can help in any way don't hesitate to ask.

  • Hi everyone,

Sorry for being an infrequent poster. Just as a recap, i was daignosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer in June 2020.  At the time we were told it was incurable and inoperable. Regardless, I started on FOLFOX and Panitumumab.  In my last post, (March 21) i reported how the chemo had been successful, to the point that surgery had become possible. I'd had surgery on my bowel removing all of the primary tumour.

As soon as I'd recuperated from the opeartion, on my consultant's advice i finished the remaining 3 courses of chemo.

At that point, scans showed that the cancer had gone from my liver!  I still had a small tumour in my left lung and an 'indication' in my right lung, which was so small they weren't sure about it.  But from my starting point, we were over the moon.

My case was discussed at the MDT (multi discipline team) meeting and the lung specialists decided that surgery on my left lung was now possible.  I had (keyhole) surgery on my left lung at the beginning of November 2021.  The plan was for a 'wedge section' but when they got in there, due to the posistioning of my tumour, they ended up removing 1/2 of my left lung (the lower lobe).

In theory that had left me 'cancer free' but we all know this is a rollercoaster.

Scans just before last Christmas showed that the 'indication' in my right lung had started to grow, but also that the cancer had returned in my liver.  Not the Chritmas present i was hoping for!

I met with my consultants in January.  They told me off for the long face and reminded me that, compared to my starting point, i was in an excellent place.  Also, they had a plan.

On 4th February I (successfully) had keyhole surgery on my liver, removing about 15%.  Then on 7th March I (successfully) had keyhole surgery on my right lung; a 'wedge section' this time, only removing 15% of the lower lobe.

I went in for a CT scan today.  I'll be meeting the lung team tomorrow and the oncology team in a few weeks.  The liver team don't want to see me until October, and they said not to worry, even if it comes back, they may be able to perform the same surgery again; they have one parient who has had it 4 times!

So, fingers crossed, I'm in a good place at the moment.  We all know that as it was a Stage 4 diagnosis, there are no guarantees, so we've booked a holiday for this summer and we are going make hay while the sun shines.

So please, don't any of you give up, i thought my case was helpless at the start, but here i am nearly 2 years on, still here, still fighting it.  My plan was and still is to be the one that makes it.
