Shock diagnosis.Bowel cancer spread to Liver.

My husband of 62 has just been told he has cancer of the bowed which has spread to the liver.

He has had CT and MRI scans and next week goes for. PET scan .

His GP thought he had an ulcer until the colonoscopy showed otherwise so it has come as a great shock. I have read that liver cancer is not curable and he has been told he may be offered chemotherapy.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer and what we can expect ? Has anyone survived this for any length of time..?

still sinking in and so many questions.

any help gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi there

i feel your pain and understand exactly how you feel right now. It just makes no sense at all does it.

Multiple husband has started chemo and they've basically given him a worse prognosis than your wife, with or without chemo. I can't understand how this is happening.

I'm on a lot of other forums on Facebook that have been massively helpful with looking at options, getting second opinions so it's worth checking those out. You are going to need support through this without a doubt. It's a long hard road and you need to look after yourself along the way. It really helps knowing that there are others you can talk to that understand.

Try to be hopeful, without hope it's too distressing and there are lots of positive stories out there xx

  • Hi

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife.

I was diagnosed with the same in 2017 (stage 4) I had a bowel resection in the November and then had 4 cycles of chemo from January 2018 to April, I then had two operations in May and June to remove the tumours in my liver, I then had 4 more cycles of chemo. I was also told that it might be incurable and inoperable. 3 years on and there is no evidence of cancer on my scans. I am also twice the age of your wife, so if she is fit and healthy there is no reason she can't beat this, with the help of her family and friends it can be done. I am proof of that.

Try and be positive, I hope her treatment goes well and rest assured the surgeons, doctors and nurses will do everything they can to help her through this.

    Good luck

    Denise

  • She has just left to go to hospital. They will try to remove the tumour on the bowl via keyhole surgery but if its stuck they will leave it as they do not want to delay her recovery as they want her on chemo ASAP.

If they can't remove it they will fit her a bag temporarily and go back and remove the tumour and back at a later time.

We have been told she will meet a oncologist to explain trials and treatments and length of live etc etc

It's very hard for both of us to get our heads around them saying how long you have to live with chemo if it works etc.. We have read that 1 person has been living still after they were diagnosed in 1998.

Reading this thread gives us hope..

  • How long does bowl surgery go on for

  • Mine took about 6/7 hours, if it's laparascopic like mine I was home after 4 days and recovered really well.

    Hope all goes well.

  • Did yours spread to your liver

  • Yes i had 3 lesions on my liver, I had 2 liver rejections one end if May and the other 2 weeks later. I am happy to say they were successful

  • My wife operation today was successful and they removed the tumour in her bowl. Chemo next as I said her cancer spread to both parts of her liver.

  • That is fantastic news. Thank you for letting me know. Take care and let me know how she gets on with the chemo and her next stage. Stay strong you are doing really well so far. Remember you can do this..........I did !!

  • Hi Sammy,

Was wondering how your dad is getting on and did he start his chemo?
