Shock diagnosis.Bowel cancer spread to Liver.

My husband of 62 has just been told he has cancer of the bowed which has spread to the liver.

He has had CT and MRI scans and next week goes for. PET scan .

His GP thought he had an ulcer until the colonoscopy showed otherwise so it has come as a great shock. I have read that liver cancer is not curable and he has been told he may be offered chemotherapy.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer and what we can expect ? Has anyone survived this for any length of time..?

still sinking in and so many questions.

any help gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis. I'm sure the chemo will help him, it certainly helped me. Let me know how it's going and if I can be of any help or you just need to talk, don't hesitate to send me a message and I'll do everything I can. Please give him my best wishes.

Be positive, stay strong, you can do this.

  • Hi Denise,

I hope your scan went with good results.

My Dad started chemo today. It's 2 weeks on 1 week off and it'll be 3 rounds of this before a scan to check if it's having any impact.

    Take care,

    Jamie

  • Hi Jamie

Glad to hear your dad has started chemo, I hope he copes well with it. Please let me know how it goes. Remember he will probably feel very tired and won't feel like doing much. I had four lots of 3 weeks on and one week off, then I had my liver ops then I started again with four lots of the same.

Thank you for asking about my scan, they couldn't find a vein (usual thing with me that's why I had to have a PICC line for the first lot of chemo and a Hickman line for the last lot) so I couldn't have the contrast which shows up the organs in more detail. I get my results on the 3rd August so fingers crossed. I am positive and optimistic.

Give your dad my best wishes

    Stay strong and safe

    Denise

  • Hi Denise,

I hope you are feeling ok, and the latest result was good news.

My Dad has had his first round of tablets (2 weeks on 1 week off) he hasn't had any major side effects other than tireness and a lack of energy. However he is still eating as normal and getting out and about without any pain. That can only be positive signs. He will have another 2 rounds before a scan to check if the chemo is working. I wish we knew now, but we just need to work towards the next 6 weeks.

    Take care,

    Jamie

  • Hi Jamie

That all sounds very positive about your dad, yes the tiredness and having no energy is a major thing when you have chemo but I'm glad to hear he is eating and getting around, although he will have to be extra cautious when he is out because of this horrid pandemic as his immune system will be lower than usual, I'm sure his onchologist told him that. 6 weeks sounds a long time but believe me it will go quick, I hope his scan shows positive results. please let me know.

My scan result shows no evidence of disease and I now only have to have a scan once a year, so I am a very happy lady.

Please give your dad my best and I also hope you are ok and coping.

    Take care and stay safe

  • Hi Denise

That's absolutely brilliant news you and the family must be so happy. Stories like this make others feel more confident that it can happen to our loved ones.

I will keep in touch and I'm hoping to give good news as well in the future.

    Take care,

    Jamie

  • Hi all,

I discovered the forum the other evening and I'd like to thank you all for your posts. It is good to read of people responding to treatment.

I was diagnised with bowel cancer in late June.  Scans showed it had spread to my liver and one of my lungs (though that is currently only a small spot).

I go in tomorrow for my PICC line to be fitted.  Start on FOLFOX on Wednesday - fortnightly for 3 months.

    I'll keep you posted

  • Hi Jamie

Yes we are all over the moom, it's great news.

I look forward to hearing your positive news soon, I hope your dad is doing ok, please give him my best wishes.

    Keep in touch

    Denise

  • Hi Andy

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis, however if you have read my story you will see that it can be beaten.

You will find the PICC line is easier than a canula to have your chemo administered, I hope it goes well for you today.

Try to be strong and positive you can do this. Keep us posted.

    Best wishes

    Denise
