Biopsy Results - Unexpected Appointments?

Hello!

So my dad has recently been diagnosed with Basal Cell skin cancer. After a visit to the hospital, they found many lumps around his body. Most of them were burned off by a nurse (apologies I don't know the technical term) but there were 4 that were too large and needed to be cut out, and so two consecutive appointments were made at the dermatology clinic.

A few weeks ago he attended the first of these, and the tissue was sent off for biopsy. While he was there, the doctor told him that one of the lumps had "spread" or grew much more internally than they expected. However, the doctor seemed more concerned about the resulting scar than the actual lump so we weren't intially worried.

He has his second appointment within the week however we woke up this morning to see that another appointment has been made for him in the dermatology clinic in late october.

Naturally this second appointment has worried us, I was wondering has anyone had any similar experiences?

We're unsure what this appointment is for and what they will possibly tell us that they cannot tell us at his second appointment next week.

I was thinking that if the news was exceptionally bad they would have referred him to the oncology clinic? And they can't perform full scans in the dermatology clinic, but I don't know if I'm just being ignorant or not?

Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

  • Hi sammy your dad can phone the appointments team at the hospital to ask what the appointment is for if they dont have that info, phone the dermatology dept and ask them, obviously your dad will have to do this as they won't tell you. The last appointment given is usually just to check that everything is OK, they are just looking after your dad really well. At the last appointment you could ask them if your dad could have a periodic skin check to catch any further occurences early. Kim
