Dad with bowel cancer

Hi, we found out this week that my dad (69) has bowel cancer which has spread to his liver, and is incurable. He has been feeling unwell since about May, but most recently in the past month or 2 has lost weight and is now really struggling to eat/drink anything. He is so tired and naps a lot throughout the day. He is having more tests tomorrow. It is so hard seeing him deteriorate so rapidly. I have read some encouraging chats on here and am trying to keep positive, we're struggling to have any quality time with him as he is so tired and doesn't want to leave the house. I hope he has the strength to undertake chemo. Any chat great fully received X

  • Hi Sarah x

I'm sorry that your dad has been diagnosed with bowel cancer it's a lot to take in especially as he's feeling poorly with it .

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer with spread to the liver in may and there was a period of tests and waiting to find our what they could do which was the hardest time.

I'm now a third of the way through a 6 month course of chemotherapy which the oncologist has said isn't curative however it may get my cancer to a stage where surgery is possible.

I'm sure once all your dad's tests are done and you see the oncologist things will seem easier. Having a plan set out really helps.

Also I didn't think I felt unwell at the time of diagnosis but I actually feel loads better now I'm having chemotherapy.

I hope your dad's tests go ok and he gets sorted out quickly with a plan xxx

    Lots of love hayley

  • Thanks Hayley and sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Glad your chemo is helping. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I'm worrying that my dad is already losing the will, he just has no strength as not being able to keep any food down or the Fortisips supplements. I know all the worry probably isn't helping with that aswell though. We are just devastated. Praying he is well enough for chemo and that it will help him x

  • Hi Sarah x

I'm 42 x I'm lucky to be in otherwise good health with no other medical problems. I've not required any surgery either , a lot of people start off with a bowel obstruction and need emergency surgery.

Has your dad had some more tests today ? Also have you seen the oncology doctor or nurse xxx

    Love hayley x

  • Hi Hayley,

Thats good to hear you haven't needed any surgery, how have you been feeling with the chemotherapy? How often do you have to go for it?

Yes dad went for the camera today and they have said they can put a stent in the bowel to help, so that's some positive news as we were worried he was already too ill for any surgery. He has managed to keep some fortisips drinks down today aswell and looked a bit better. I know there will be good and bad days but trying to stay positive and strong for him. He is waiting to hear when he can next see the oncologist, hopefully they will tell him what the treatment plan will be? X
