chemo and radiation

having chemo for five weeks apart from weekends then internal radiation for cervical cancer what side affects will i face im not frightend and im quite stubborn just need to know what my body is going to go through thankyou xx

  • Hi bm

Hopefully someone with experience of cervical cancer will jump in and answer your questions, though they will probably say "it depends" as there a so many variables including different combinations of chemo and everyone's body seems to react differently.

The one thing no-one warned me about was the boredom factor. There is a lot of waiting around and if you're having chemo intravenously a lot of sitting around. Take a book or a Kindle with you.

Ask your oncologist and the chemo nurses what side effects to expect from the chemo and don't suffer in silence. Part of their job is to mitigate the side effects, so tell them if you have any. Mine included both diarrhoea and constipation (relieved using drugs), aching muscles, hair thinning, strange tastes in my mouth, cold feeling fingers and toes and extreme tiredness for which only sleep helped.

Not for everyone but I tried to exercise my body whilst on chemo. Nothing extreme just walking my dog slowly round the fields but it felt good to get out and it seemed to help ease the aches and pains.

I've not had radiati therapy, so can't help with that question.

    best wishes

  • Hello. I had stage 2A cervical cancer. I had the same chemo schedule as you did, 26 rounds of external radiation and 6 of internal radiation.  I was tired, low appetite but generally did well. Caught a cold during and that was rough. Overall, it was "do-able".  I didn't lose my hair from chemo but after all my treatments where finally over, my hair suddenly thinned.  It was only short-lived and came back like normal pretty quickly.  People couldn't tell it was thinner, except my hair stylist.  What stage are you? Ask me any other questions you want, I know it is scary.
