14cm Complex Mass

Hi, My 26 year old daughter has been experiencing horrific abdominal pain for the last few months. Despite several visits to the GP and two to A&E constipation was blamed. We paid privately for a scan which showed a 14cm complex septated mass on her right ovary and into the douglas pouch. We took the report to the GP which recommeded a rapid referral, blood tests for tumour markers CA125 and CA19-9,it also recommended an MRI or CT and open surgery. He also said she would almost certainly lose at least one ovary due to the placing of the mass. Bloods were taken the next day and the referral has been made. What sort of timescales is she looking at. It is so worrying and to be honest it's like being in a parallel universe ! Thank you for reading my post - any advice would be gratefully received.

  • Hi there Tallaght, welcome to the forum. When I read your post, I was annoyed that had you not taken things in your own hands, who knows where this could have gone. Thank goodness you did pay privately for a scan which really should have been done when the problem continued, even after several visits to medical facilities. Thank goodness your daughter has you in her corner. Hopefully, she will get the help she needs in a timely fashion now, and it seems like they are hopping to get things done. No doubt somewhat anxious that they didn't act sooner. I think because your daughter is young, she was deemed to not be experiencing any serious issues.

A similar thing happened to me back when I had blood in my urine. Two different doctors told me that isn't where the blood was coming from??? Hello! I'm a great-grandmother?? I argued with them and one was a family doctor I had for 20 years, so she knew me and also knew that I don't run to a doctor in the blink of an eye. Finally, I said I would be taking this further if they didn't refer me to a urologist. That scared them so they did make the referral. Sure enough, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive bladder cancer that had alread spread to my ureter tube on the way to my kidney. After major surgery - 5 hours and two blood transfusions later, I had a large part of my ureter tube replaced with a replacement tube. Needless to say, I now have a different family doctor. (Was lucky to get another one as there is a shortage of family doctors here.) That was more than 3 years ago and after several surgeries, treatments, etc. later, I still have my bladder - no thanks to those two doctors. I was highly insulted that they thought I didn't know enough about my body after giving birth to 3 children, to know where I was bleeding from.

Sorry for the rant, but unfortunately, we really do have to be vigilant when it comes to decisions that are made about our own health, and how we are treated by medical professionals. I'm so glad you took the initiative to have your daughter seen privately. You shouldn't have had to do it, and I shouldn't have had to threaten my doctors, but I'm so glad we did. Kudos to you, and I hope your daughter gets along okay now that they're finally listening and doing something about it.

Come back on the forum from time to time and let us know how your daughter is managing. Best of luck to her.

  • Thank you for your response. I will pass the number onto my daughter - I am so grateful

  • We have had blood results today that have shown elevated levels of CA125. We have been told by the practice nurse that this in no way means she has ovarian cancer, however, its hard not to worry. We have an appointment with the consultan gynaecologist next Thursday which is exactly 2 weeks since the rapid referral.

Hopefully we will get more information then.

  • Hi Everyone,

Mudaughter had her appointment with the consultant gynaecoloigist today and we came away very annoyed and frustrated. The blood results had not been forwarded and he asked us what the ca125 level was and when we told him he said maybe we had got confused as some people do when told numbers, he said it was unlikely a girl of 26 would have ovarian cancer. We were sent to the maternity department for a repeat blood test. He also said the mass was 6cm and I had to correct him and tell him it was 14cm. He then said he would see her again in 4 weeks - I nearly fell off my chair !! After a full and frank discussion (as he clearly had not read the report from the scan we had ) he agreed to refer for urgent CT scan which will be at least 2 weeks and he has agreed to see her in 2 weeks time. I asked if it would speed thigs up if we paid for a CT scan, he said that was up to us but there was a process to go through and we would have to understand things take time - his words were even if this is cancer things do not happen overnight !

  • Hello and Im so very sorry this is happening to you. I am in a very similar position and very frightened and very frustrated by the delays but keep being told there are no clinics. as you have had a clinic appointment, I would ring the consultants secretary, explain the seriousness and ask for an urgent mri scan. I had to do this for my mum who I lost ti a different cancer nearly 3 years ago, it may not have saved her and the delays were insane but t least you will feel better for trying, good luck x

  • How frustrating for you all.  At times the NHS is very frustrating. Personally I would pay and go private, as that's the kind of person I am. I need to know that I done everything in my power to obtain the best possible outcomes based upon the information I have to hand. If that means fast tracking your daughter by paying then so be it. Every day, week, month count if it's something nasty.  My sister had an ovarian cyst removed from her ovary when she was young and it was dealt with very quickly fortunately. It's embarassing to think a specialist can sit there in front of you without going through the case properly first. It installs no faith in at all. Good luck x

  • Thank you for your response. Completely out of the blue we had a call from the hospital today with an appointment for a CT scan on Monday afternoon. Whilst I am over the moon that there appears to be a complete u turn in the response from the consultant I am now worried that the repeat bloods that they did yesterday have shown something to be worried about. On the plus side when we go back in 2 weeks we should have the CT results, the second blood result and the second pelvic scan result.

I will let you know how things go

  • Good luck for Monday then. Maybe the consultant just doesn't know as much as he should...

  • Hi there Tallaght, I just read your latest post and I would guess that your daughter's consultant is running scared that this situation has taken much longer than it should have. I'm glad that they are now moving on this though and honestly, even when they know for sure that some one does indeed have cancer, they still don't get things done very fast anyway. Your daughter does have her youth in her favor though, so here's to keeping fingers crossed for a good outcome on the scan.

Just as an aside though, we here in Canada, don't have the option of paying privately for these services, unless one decides to go across the border to the United States.

Be sure to come back on here and let us know how things work out. All the best for your daughter.
