Stage 4 lung cancer

Hi.this is the 1st time ive posted on here . not sure im even in the right place.my mum has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.its spread to her shoulder bone.the cancer on the lung is only 2cm big but the doctor has told her its not curable.im confused as to why they cant chop that bit of the lung off and give her chemo to get rid of it in the bone.all theyve told her at the moment is they will give her radio therapy and chemo but that is too prolong her life not too cure her.has anyone ever had stage 4 lung cancer and survived.i know everyones different but currently just clinging to hope that theres people out there that have survived coz feel like ive been hit by a 10 tonne brick!!!

  • Hi Regina, I'm sorry to hear that your Mom has lung cancer. I can't answer your question about why they can't operate on her lung and take it out, but they must know what they're doing. Have you asked them why? I think they would likely explain why if asked. I have lung cancer as well and even though I have had 2 major surgeries, it is back again and now they can't operate another time. They're treating it with radiation now, but I'm on the downward slope so to speak. I also have other cancers that at the moment, are quiet, whatever that means. This cancer journey is a tough one for all concerned and it can be very frustrating, even more so when there doesn't seem to be logical answers as to why things are done the way they are. I think there are several factors they consider when deciding on an appropriate treatment plan for patients, and I also believe its' pretty complicated. Is your Mom wanting to know why they don't operate? Its' been my experience that oncologists are pretty good to explain something when asked, but they don't always do it otherwise.

I did want to welcome you to the forum though, so I hope you will continue to post here. People on here understand the challenges that cancer patients experience because those of us with cancer are going through it. Family members too, are struggling and there are lots of them on here too. Come back on the forum and let us know how things go for your Mom, and also let us know why her medical team don't want to operate.

    Take care.

    Lorraine
