My dad has stomach cancer

Hello.

I have just found out on thursday that my dad has stomach cancer.  Our gp called to advise him following an endoscopy in which the consultant believed he had an ulcer.  When she told our gp she said she was shocked that it had come back as cancer. The gp informed us that the consultant said it was very early atage cancer and he would be called for a scan this coming week.

I am so scared that the news will be the worst. I am an only child and 10 weeks pregnant with twins and i have a 8 month old little girl.  It breaks my heart to think ny dad will not be around to see the birth of the twins.

Im so depressed i cant stop crying .

Xx

  • Hi Lucas

Before you get all worked up you have said one very important thing - it's a very early stage.

Stomach cancer is a nasty one there's no denying it that's because so many people are dignosed at a late stage - 80% are stage 4 when diagnosed and the outlook is bleak but at stage 1 and 2 most people do well.

They tend to measure these things in 5 year survival which means that people at this stage survive at least 5 years and many do more.

Stage 1 dignosis has 80% making 5 years and stage 2 has 50% making 5 years

So from what you say if he's an early diagnosis I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be there to play with his new grandchildren for a good long time.

  • Hi Lucas,

I'm with Graham on this one. No-one wants to be diagnosed with any type of cancer but, if you have to be diagnosed, Stage 1 or 2 is when you'd want to be diagnosed.

Good luck to you and your Dad.

  • Hi

Sorry i havent replied we have been told that as dad has heart failure he will be unable to have the operation or chemo as is heart would not take it.  They have offered him to talk to a pychologist and the mcmillan nurse is coming to introduce himself on friday.  When we have spoken to the dr the cancer had not spread but they dont know how fast it is growing so could only give a time scale of 3-9 months.

I am broken as it is such a shock.
