Diagnosed with stomach cancer

I am a 53 year old male married with an 11 year old son and I was informed that I had stomach cancer almost a month ago today . A CT scan confirmed this and that it was also in the local lymph nodes. My Gastroenterologist has requested PET/CT scan and MRI which have just been completed this week. The CT scan showed some abnormal signs also in my liver however they are not sure if this is just due to a fatty liver. I was told that if it was also in the liver the prognosis was about a year. Since then the anguish has been unbearable. Some days you feel strong only to plummet to the lowest of lows. I have an appointment with the Oncologist next week however it is traumatic while waiting to know the results. Treatment if only in the stomach versus improving quality of remaining life if also in the liver. I only hope that next week I hear that it is only in the stomach. Sad as it may sound, this would be at least good news as strange as it may seem.

  • Hi NP,

Your last sentence doesn't seem strange at all, many of us on here can easily relate to that.

All I can say is good luck for next week's appointment and please don't pay too much attention to the prognosis you are given. These are always based on averages (logically 50% of people will live longer than average) and don't take into account your age (53 is relatively young), physical fitness or co-morbidities (both of these can affect how much chemo or radiotherapy your body can cope with).

    Best wishes
    Dave.

  • Hi Dave

Thanks for the positive message. Only those that have been through this can ever now what it is like. At least not long to go and I will know how I will be treated. Luckily we have nice weather today so this will keep me in the garden and keep my mind occupied. Maybe in a few weeks time gardening will not be possible. Since my initial diagnosis I have still been going to work. This has also helped to keep my mind occupied. I will post my results of the scans and treatment plan for information. Thanks again
