Breast reconstruction

l had a WLE 4 weeks ago and then a second op 2 weeks ago as there wasn't a clear margin.  I went for the results from the second op yesterday and have now been told I need a mastectomy.

I am considering a reconstruction and would like to know other people's thoughts / experience of having LD flap or DIEP / SIEA flap reconstruction.

Thanks Carol x

  • Hi Cazzled

We have some information here about different types of breast reconstruction.

I hope it is helpful to you.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you, gives some clear points but I'm still undecided lol. I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on each process if they've had it etc.

    Hi Cazzled,

I have had a lumpectomy 8 years ago and a double mastectomy 7. Unfortunately, I could not have reconstruction, because of previous surgery. I manage pretty well with an array of different prostheses, for different purposes.

Sorry that I cannot help you any further. There are a number of people on this site who have had reconstruction and I hope that they will reply to you soon with their stories.

Plase let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I had an immediate reconstruction with an ADM assisted implant as I was not keen on the idea of having a second part of my body operated on and the longer recovery time involved (I have young children, so not practical!).

This does leave the door open for a tissue flap reconstruction in the future if my implant fails (I’m due radiotherapy).

My mum had the LD flap some years ago. It has generally been a good option for her though she did suffer complications (skin infection on her back) which took ages to heal. Also some permenant loss of strength in the shoulder.
