breast cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 weeks ago from biopsy results. I am currently waiting for my first appointment with the consultant which is Monday 4th.. I have to admit I do feel a little let down as I had scan 8 months ago but was told it was fine just hormone changes in my body. I noticed the lump more and it started to hurt so my partner insisted I go back to the doctors, which I did. They sent me off to the breast clinic where I had another scan and an ultra sound both showed no signs, luckily the doctor wanted to do a biopsy as the lump is right in the nipple. well the results confirm my worst thoughts... I have been in complete turmoil since.. I really can't understand why it is taking 2 weeks before I see a consultant to discuss treatment procedures, is the normal ?

  • Hi Sarah,
I didn't have a lump but as soon as I found tethering on my breast I knew it was cancer. I had the ultra sound and biopsy within 3 weeks of asking for a referal through my GP and then had to wait 2 weeks before seeing a consultant. I do think this is an average waiting time but once I had been seen everything moved pretty quickly. I was waking up from surgery 10 days later!
I have heard people waiting very much longer than I had to. Perhaps it's a bit of a postcode lottery situation?
My Chemotherapy schedule kicked in as soon as my body could handle it after surgery and my local hospital have already booked me in for Radiotherapy before the Chemo has ended! It's all going on here.
I really hope you find it as fast flowing as I have once you have seen the consultant and all the results are in.
Good luck with your treatment.... Joanne x

  • Thank you Joanne, I have just found it so hard. every little ache and pain in my body I think where else is the cancer, I guess this is also a normal thing to think. I have 2 young children both boys 12 & 5.. I haven't told them yet as I don't have any answers to give them... When I get upset I have to walk out them room..

Hope you are feeling ok on your treatment, sound like you are doing well.

    Stay strong

    Sarah xx

  • Hi, i went for a general mamagram last year and they found breast cancer, i wouldn't have known it was there otherwise. I was lucky enough to have a cancellation where the op was concerned , diagnosis on the Thursday, pre op on the Friday and op on the Monday, didn't have chance to think about it which was good. Very difficult when you have to wait it plays on your mind. Thankfully mine was only stage 1 when found and every thing has gone fine, as with my mother who was diagnosed straight after and my sister-in-law who is going through it now.The time you are waiting is the norm.I hope all goes well for you. • I'm doing really well on the treatment actually. My cancer just LOVES my hormones and is a nasty one so having to go through chemo (which is a pig! I won't lie!), then radiotherapy and they've put my in an early menopause. I never got around to having children but ho, hum.... It is what it is.
Personally, and everyone is different, the initial diagnosis and waiting for surgery was the worst part. I was imagining this poisonous growth in my body which was trying to kill me and everyone around me were dragging their feet giving it more time to grow to the point it would be inoperable and I would die. Sound familiar? EVERYTHING after the surgery and knowing the tumour is gone is a total walk in the park compared to what you are going through right now.
Please keep us all updated on your progress and treatment as the support on this forum is fabulous.
    Good luck........x
