Good luck. I know how u feel, I'm getting my results next week, waiting is agony, just need to know what you're up against don't you and then get on with it. Let us know how you get on x
Hi Shona
I was looking at your other post about the number of people in your familly with cancer.
I know something of this. My wife died of a form of ovarian cancer in October, and her mother had died of the same nearly 30 years earlier and she'd lost 3 cousins to it and her brother had died of cancer 6 weeks earlier.
She had a genetic issue - specifically the BRCA1 gene defect - I think Angelina Jolie has done a lot of publicising about it .
We've recently had tests back for my daughter and found that she does *not* have the gene - she got my good copy - probably the greatest present I ever gave her!
Now I just checked the guidelines and unless your mother was under 50 when she was diagnosed I don't think that alone is enough for them to consider your familly history suspicious for a genetic problem, but if you have had any other relatives with breast or ovarian cancer, cousins, aunts etc. then you definitely should talk to your GP about having a genetic test done for it.
Do you have any jewish ancestry? that is also a factor as it is much more common in Jewish familly trees.
I ask because it may not be relevant for you but I don't know if you have any children or not.
I hope that this isn't the case as it's definitely a club you don't want to be a member of!
Best of luck with your results hope its something easy to treat
Thanks!! Still don't know much but so far quite positive. The cancer is smallish at 1.5cm and the cells are well differentiated. Got to wait another week for the oestrogen receptor/HER2 test and I'm booked in for 11th April for lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy - so still don't know exactly what the treatment is going to be and won't know until a week after that so a month to wait. It's a game of riding the positives so I'm celebrating my well differentiated cells tonight :) good luck to you :)
Thanks, I was reading somewhere that the researchers don't fully understand all kinds of heredity in cancer but yes my mum was younger than 50 and no I'm not Jewish. I have two sons but I also have a niece so I will be asking for genetic testing if they will give it to me. Sorry about your family, it's horrible to lose loved ones to this awful disease good luck
