New diagnosis

Hi all,

We have found out recently that my father has a tumour in his brain. He is having surgery to try and remove as much as possible next week. He also has quite a large tumour on his lung (which they think has spread to the brain) and it is also in his lymph nodes. We haven't had a prognosis for the lung etc but was told this week without the surgery on his brain he would have a matter of weeks. I tried to ask what his prognosis is but they couldn't give me an answer. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or been through similar as I'd like to prepare myself and my son etc if it's not looking good if that makes sense? Is the surgery likely to prolong for months or years taking into account the lung too? Sorry for all the info I'm just very confused at the moment and would like an idea of what to expect

  • Hello MrsB

Sorry that you find yourself in this position.

It sounds as if your father has lung cancer that has spread to lymph nodes and to the brain? I'm not clear which is the primary cancer and that is quite important.

But I'll assume that is the case

Unfortunately lung cancer survival still isn't as good as we might hope only 15-20% or so of people diagnosed with stage iv lung cancer (where it has spread) survive for over a year and the numbers making 5 years are too small to make it onto the statistics.

    There is more information here:

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../survival

But like I say the type of primary cancer is crucial, if it's a different cancer that has spread to his lungs from somewhere else then all of the above would be wrong.

I hope that helps a bit
