Inconsistent knee pain= lymphoma

Hi,

Recently I have being diagnosed with lymphoma (recent scans have shown it is only localised but are unsure which type of lymphoma it is yet). I am 20 years old and quite active, last year I suffered an injury while landing awkwardly. I didnt think too much at the time as it just looked swollen and did the RICE method for a few days and it was all better, but 2 weeks later I did exercise and was all fine until one day the pain came back, it ranged from a stiff feel to a sharp throbbing. This happened February last year, it took me until September to see the GP in Wetherby, Leeds as the pain was so inconsistent and only came on after heavy exercise. Similarly to the GP opinion, we fought it was some form of ligament tear that hasnt fully recovered but had to referred to QMC in Nottingham as thats where I am at uni. There was 2 months from the GP meeting to the apppointment at QMC, the consultant said it looked and what youve said seems like a meniscus tear and going to have keyhole surgery. A month later ,a few days after christmas I was back down to Notts to have the MRI scan to see the extent of the damage of the knee, 2 weeks later I had a call to discuss the results. Then the consultant said theyve found what appears to be a tumour, at the time I wasnt too bothered as I have another tumour in my other (right) knee which found was chondroblastoma (benign) and reffered to the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham for a biopsy. The registrar there said there wasnt anything that resembled a sarcoma but had to make sure, I had the biopsy then 2 weeks later I had a call saying theyve found malignancy in the blood. I was in shock but at the same time serious denial, I mean how can on-and-off knee pain resemble blood cancer? If I had all the symptoms that resembled a cancer of the blood I would of been more accepting of it, he said he will refer me to the Bexley Wing in Leeds. For that whole week from the call to the appointment at Leeds, I was on the internet 24/7 looking at information on blood cancers thinking what have I got, myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma or something else? Was the worst period of my life as I was just wondering if I was going to die and theyve just left me with the line "malignancy in the blood". When the appointment came around at the haemotology department in St James' Hospital (Jimmys) I couldnt be bothered getting out of bed, my mum persuaded me and got on with it looking like a rotten vegetable throughout the day. I saw the consultant who was very nice and helpful i must say, she told me they think I have lymphoma. She was asking me all these questions and what I have, abdominal pains? Coughing up blood? enlarged lymph nodes? night sweats? fever? losing weight?. I was chucking a bit as I stressed the only thing I had was inconsistent knee pain. Like I said before, if I had symptoms that resembled lymphoma then I would of been more accepting of it but still cant get my head round it. As I am in my final year of uni, everything is hold, the consultant said I will have to have chemotherapy so will probably defer once treatment is done.  I had a bone marrow, PET scan and obviously a blood test. They said the good news was that it was localised, only in the knee and a little bit in the groin which was nothing to worry about, but she said I will have to have more tests as there not 100% sure what it is despite there confidence it is lymphoma. So I am booked into LGI for a CT scan and possible biopsy to confirm this diagnosis, she also said I will have to have radiotherapy. Feel like since September all I am doing is just waiting.

Just goes to show that even something as common as knee pain which resembled a meniscus tear can be something serious as lymphoma ( which I am still in denial about :P )

Thanks

Daniel :)

  • Hi Daniel

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your story with us. I'm so sorry to hear that you possibly have lymphoma but I'm glad you have been booked in for a CT scan and a possible biopsy as you will then have more clarity.

I'm sure our forum members will be along shortly to offer some support but in the meantime, if you'd like some advice please do feel free to contact our nurses on 0808 800 40 40 (freephone). Phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

  • My son who is an athlete...big into running for years had problems with his knee like the young man above he would rest and knee would be grand , would run then it would swell but be ok again for few weeks.eventually went for physio and finally MRI to be told he had non Hodgkin's lymphoma.he has just started first session of 6 months cycle of chemo.he waits for PET scan to see if this is the primary or if there are other tumors.hard time ahead but has been told one of the most cureable cancers

  • Hi just wanted to ask, how is it going for you now? Is everything fine?

  • Hello!

Yes all is fine now. I was diagnosed with non hodgkin lymphoma and had 3 RCHOP chemotherapy sessions and radiotherapy too. All better within a few months and after I have moved on from it all really.

Is there anything I can help you with or a chat?

  • Hi there..So i have been having knee pain mainly in one knee for about 3 years altogether now..It all started when i thought it was just down to going to the gym alot... So i eventually went to have a scan which the results were aparantley a meniscus tare from to much exercise..Anyways i wasnt happy about this as the pain was getting unbareable  so i went back to the gp who then referred me for an MRI..The results from this then showed a tumour.I then went on to get an operation to remove this tumour which was benign...1 year on After this operation there is no difference the pains still there had another scan nothing showing up the results are fine...My other knee is now also hurting and every now and again i get pain in my groin on the opposite side to the main sore knee.No weight loss no night sweats.Neck sometimes feels swelled though..Im really fed up its been a long 2 and a half 3 years..I am now back to square 1 just feels like im going round in circles..Any advice ?Tia

  • Hello! Well firstly I want to say I am sorry to hear about this! This seems problematic but I'm not a doctor so I am not going to guess.

For me, to relieve the pain, cold peas/ice bag and keep the knee elevated helped but was a temporary solution, that's why I had to go to the hospital.

It seems you have to had something to have it removed otherwise as you said, you will just go back in circles and not really get rid of the problem.

Reply if you want to chat more.

  • Thanks for the advice. Its been ongoing too long now im waiting to possibly be told to go for another MRI this week they are now only doing telephone calls..Im not sure how they can tell me whats wrong over the phone just from word of mouth though..Also can i ask did you have pain when siting for long periods of time for example like a long car journey or aeroplane journeys?

  • Hi Dan,

I hope you are well now. I know its many years later and you may not get this post. But I thought I'd ask. I have hodgkins lymphoma with years of ignorant doctors and finally found a large tumour in my chest. But I've had the same knee pain as you describe since 2017 and we are on 2021. They keep sending me back saying loose weight, or yes it's a tear but you can walk. I have a high suspicion that it would be lymphoma spreading or something serious. Because last week the pain was so intense I couldn't walk, yet the doctor asked me would I like more pain killers I said no I'd like to find out what it is causing this, regardless of what it may be. Honestly, had enough of GPs doing at their jobs! After fighting with the gp he's finally referred me to an osteopath..

AAnyway my question was what was pain like did it ever spread from the knee? Mine is beginning to spread to the thigh and shins.. also how did you manage to get the Mri? I really don't feel good about this...

  • I'm so sorry about your knee pain ...I'm being tested for lymphoma & I have the same thing ...could you possibly have Artritis ? I only ask as a blood test can check your rheumatoid factor ...mine was high so they're referring me onto a RA specialist too ...

not knowing is terrible ...stay strong & move GPS , they're shrugging you off & you know your body best x

  • Hi Dan I have NHL in my left knee. Started as an ache in January. It's nowhere else. Consultant said do 6 sessions of chemo then radiotherapy then surgery. I'm on morphine for pain as have multiple tibial fractures from tumour growing. Did you not need surgery? Consultant not seen this before or anyone else involved. Think we're 1 in a million!!!!

Hlad you're now fit and well, how long did it take once you started chemo?

    thanks Jaynie
