Breast cancer

Well I've seen the oncologist today, definatey, have to have radiotherapy and hormone tablets. Question is do I have chemo or not. They have offered it if I want. Chances of it not coming back is 90% but with chemo it goes to 93% do I put myself  through  treatment for 3% wot woul others do?

  • I would do it personally - you can always stop but if you opt out now, it may not be offered again.  I wonder how you would feel if you opted out and then got a recurrence.

Ask for more time to gather information and make a decision.

Good luck with whatever you decide x

  • Thanks max

That was exactly my thoughts, the idea of it coming back and having to go through treatment again doesn't appeal. It's nice just to get other people's thoughts, to re inforce I'm doing the right thing.x

  • I did have chemo because I wanted every percentage available to me to work in my favor , and I don't regret it, but would I have it again, no. Even now that I am having new biopsys done on the other Boob , I still say never again . It's everyone's choice , just don't be pushed into it by your oncologist , it's your life not theirs . Stay strong and all the best x

  • I have just had a second visit to Oncologist following oncotype test which came back low risk however advice now is if micromasts are found in lymph nodes should be treated as node positive and this is what happened in my case. I felt very uncertain after the first appointment but I had 2 weeks to think about things, talk to others including my breast care nurse who was so supportive and decided to go with chemo as I felt I would then have peace of mind. I knew that if I didn't I would spend every day wondering and I want to be able to move on from all this having done all I can. I start treatment on Friday. Felt relieved to have made the decision. My second appointment with oncologist was very different from first. I know it is the right choice and I'm ready for it.  Thinking of you.

  • Hi yes i would and did have the chemo treatment i dont think you would be offered it unless your consultant felt you would benift from this treatment.I have had two differant types of cancer five years apart and had the chemo treatment and if in the future i was advised that it was in my best interest to have this treatment i would .I Know that it makes you poorly, but well worth doing .Ask for more information if unsure .Sue x

  • Hi Susie, I had a double mastectomy and lymph glands removed from under both arms due to Stage 4 aggressive cancer in left breast. I need to decide if having chemo will prolong my life. Only had the op March 1st. Meeting oncologist next week. I have three children and five grandchildren. Patricia. X

  • I had exactly the same as you and was given the option whether or not to have chemo, but I chose not to have it after reading all about it. Look into it carefully, it's your decision. Do what you feel is right for you everyone is different x
