Post total thyroidectomy

hi guys. I had a total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago today. I truly feel like I should be doing more than I am but when I try I'm getting exhausted. Is this normal? Am I pushing myself too hard?

  • Hello annabw,

Try not to feel guilty for not doing more - your body needs time to heal and recover so do stop and rest if you feel exhausted.

We have some information here on life after thyroid surgery which includes some advice on recovering physically.

If you have any questions, feel free to ring our expert nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the recovery process following a thyroidectomy.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks so much. I've had some terrible days of literally no energy and just sleeping all the time.  I think I've made peace with the fact I need to take it easy now. I've certainly expected a bit too much of myself.

  • Hi,

I had total thyroidectomy for a thyroid T3 cancer about 1 year ago and I can say that during the first month I was really tired too. Do not worry for that. Probably your levothyroxine hormone needs to reach the right level too.

I hope this helps, take care

    bye

  • Hi mary87,

Thank you so much. I think I've learnt to take it a bit easier on myself. I've ventured out a few times now which I felt a bit better for. Think I'm still getting my head round having this too.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience. Hope you're getting on well x
