Newly diagnosed

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer with 1 positive lymph node. So far I have had a lumpectomy and 9 lymph nodes removed. I know I have to have 3 wks radiotherapy and hormone tablets, but not sure yet if I have to have chemotherapy. I have to wait two wks or so before I see oncologist, which is sending me stir crazy. Has anyone else been in this situation and if so what treatment have you had.

  • Hi smudge

I'm sorry for your diagnosis and I hope that your treatment has gone well so far.I too was diagnosed with invasive ductual breast cancer in December last year.I have had a mastectomy and I'm having my second chemo tuessay. I am also having radiotherapy and hormone tablets for 5-10 years.

Have you had your pathology meeting? I was told by the lady that performed my operation at my pathology results meeting that I would be offered chemotherapy and given my appointment to see my oncologist then.I wonder if the possibility of chemo was mentioned at all to you?

My advice would be to go in with an open mind don't think of chemotherapy as a bad thing.Take all your offered to kick cancers butt.Remember it's the belts and braces..

    Thinking of you

    Take care

  • Ps) I know the waiting sucks.you want it all to start and get it over with but at the same time you don't.

Feel free to chat anytime x

  • Thanks for your reply, my pathology report of what I understand showed I had an 11mm lump tiny I know!! I had the sentinel node biopsy which came back grade 3 positive, so I then had another 8 nodes removed. Chemotherapy has been mentioned but is not certain yet. I am waiting to see the oncologist now, I know I am definitely having radiotherapy and hormone therapy. How have you been coping with treatment? Its nice to have a space to talk to people who have been through the same.

Take care and I hope all goes well.x

  • Hi again

From the sounds of it-in my opinion I'd say chemotherapy is a real possibility for you.I wouldn't be at all surprised if your oncologist offered it.Personally I will take all I can get so I make sure I see my kids grow up.

I had the sentinel node taken too but mine was clear so I didn't need anymore nodes taking.

I had two tumours one of 12mm one of 30 I think. Also had an area around them both of pre-cancerous cells.1 was a grade 2 and one a grade 3.

My treatment is going well so far thankyou,I've only had 1 treatment of chemo #2 is Tuesday although I had a week or so being very tired I think I'm coping OK so far.

My hair came out last night in the bath my husband had to shave it for me,I think that's been the most upsetting thing so far since diagnosis.I will get used to it.

When do you see your oncologist?

  • Hi Ness

I haven't seen oncologist yet, am going to ring hospital tomorrow to speak to someone. My breast card nurse had mentioned the possibility of 6 cycles of fec chemotherapy, but because I take a fair few other medications they have not yet decided.

That's the main reason I didn't want chemo, was I didn't want to lose my hair, are you going with wigs or scarfs or both.

I'm sure with the support of your husband you will cope well, here if you wanna chat anytime.x

Once you see your oncologist he/she will give you your own set of survival statistics which is supposed to help you decide what treatment you want if any.Although I think I can speak for most of us know here when I say we don't tend to take much note of those!

    I'm having 6 rounds of fec-t.

Yes hair going is just horrible but it's worth it.I hope you do manage to sort out some treatment that will work for you with your situation.

Mostly I have scarfs I have some hats too.Not really bothered about a wig.
