Oesophageal cancer at stomach joint

Yesterday my husband was told that he probably has cancer of the oesophagus, possibly into the stomach. He had an endoscopy and today he's having a a CAT scan. We should get the biopsy results on Thursday evening and we should also then be told if he needs a PET scan. I had a good look at information on this type of cancer on the Internet and the outlook is not good. One study suggests he may have less than a year to live. I'm terrified and full of anxiety feeling nauseous the whole time.  He's 65 and we've only been together 5 years. How do I stay positive for him and not collapse? He isn't showing outward signs of fear.

  • Hi AlisonElizabeth,

It's early days yet - you won't really know what your husband is facing until you get the scan and biopsy results through. At that point you will know what stage and grade the cancer is (assuming it is cancer). Try not to panic and for goodness sake don't consult Dr Google! There is a lot of scary, out of date and plain wrong information on the Internet.

I have been living with Stage 4 Cancer of the Oesophageal/Gastric junction since September 2013 and I know of others who have survived far longer with a very good quality of life. Averages are exactly that and - by definition half the people with a condition will survive longer than average. The statistics don't consider age (65 is relatively young), fitness or whether the patient has other conditions which might affect their chances of survival.

    Good luck with the results.
