tongue cancer - scared

hello

my name is Gill and on the 2 feb i was diagnosed with tongue cancer. i have suspected this since last october but doctors didnt seem to think the biopsy was urgent and i was left till mid jan 2016 before i got an appointment for the biopsy. the results came back as cancer and i am now waiting for an operation. i have had my scans and i meet with the docs to discuss my plan of action on 18th feb.

i am very scared of the operation as the biopsy was bad enough, and i am scared that i will be in lots of pain and unable to drink fluids.

any advice from anyone will be welcome.

EDIT **** Date 21/9/2020

The first 2 years were very tough regarding eating and jaw movement, but this was due to radiotherapy and chemo treatment. In a nut shell the op and treatment was a success and I am here enjoying life again xx I just want others to know that things can get better ( although different) and the future can be bright.  Lots of love to everyone reading this post and if you would like to read my blog just search mybigc.wordpress.com

  • Hi

I had similar issues with being diagnosed. Nothing could be found with all the blood test etc. They were going to sign me off but I explained that I knew something was wrong and after a reluctantly agreed to MRI I was diagnosed with a T2 cancer in the base of the tongue. 2 weeks into RT/Chemo and feeling good. Bit sore physically but keeping strong mentally.Treatment is my friend. Each day the cancer gets weaker while I get stronger

    Good luck

  • Hi Nick

i went for more biopsies this week and they removed a bed tooth, they said this was just in case I needed RT.

I get my final results and treatment plan on July 6th.

Can I ask you how you are coping with it all. since I was diagnosed I feel people are avoiding me, I feel isolated and probably getting depressed.

How many circles of RT and chemo are you receiving.

    sorry for all the questions.

    keep strong x

    kind regards

  • With all the coronavirus going off I don't really know what to do. I'm not registered with a dentist but for the past 2 weeks or so I have had what looks like a hole in my tongue. This has been very uncomfortable and painful. I've been waking up in the middle of the night with it burning

    Any advice

  • Hi Sarahlou

I noticed youve posted on an old thread. You would get more replies if you start a new thread.

I have had oral cancer myself so if I can be of any help.

Do you have a GP? Give them a call I dont know if they are consulting as normal but probably not.

Is there a possibility you have a rough tooth? You would be surprised how many people get sores due to this. Rule of thumb if a sore is non healed in three weeks get it checked out.

Holding warm salty water in your mouth is good for soothing and promotes healing, use it as often as you can. If no improvement then get an appointment.

Take care and good luck xx
