Father diagnosed - bowel cancer

Hello everyone

My dad late last year was diagnosed with Bowel cancer and it appears there is some in his stomach. This was a massive shock for me and my family. Tommrow my dad is meeting a Oncologist to discuss treatment. I am really worried because they have already said it cannot be cured but chemotherapy may help extend his life. My dad has lost weight but he has always had a skinny build. The only way that helps me get through this is that at the last miniute something will go in our favour and my dad to be around for a long time to come. However i am really worried tommorrow the doctors will tell him he cannot have chemotherapy because it is too risky. My mind is just all over the place at the moment and i just want my dad to get better soon. I think i just need ressaurance about the future and whether holding onto hope is the right thing to do :/

thank you for reading.

  • Hello LJG,

I noticed you hadn't received a response yet so thought  I would say hi and bump your thread back to the top of the forum and hopefully others will be along soon to share their experience with you.

I am very sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis. How did your appointment with the doctor go and what was said about chemotherapy?

This forum will hopefully help you feel a little better as it can help to talk to others who truly understand.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

    Thank you.

They have given my dad some steroids to take for 3  weeks. After this they aim to try chemo via his veins and tablet. Im seeing as the positive but am worried about the effects of this on him when there is no guarentee of sucess.

  • Hi LJG

You know I think sometimes people have an image about chemotherapy that it doesn't deserve.

When my wife went for her first chemo therapy session she was put in a comfy chair hooked up to a drip and over a few hours the chemptherapy agents were pumped into her. We left thinking was that it?

A couple of days later she had some flu-like symptoms for about 24 hours but was very well throughout.

On occasion her white blood cells numbers were not high enough for further treatment and she had to wait a while for them to build up before she could be treated again.

She went through a number of years of chemo treatment and tolerated it very well, true it was a different type of cancer and she was younger but it's a very effective type of treatment and I'm sure will benefit your father if he can get fit and well enough to get on it

  • Thank you Graham.

This is comforting to know, yes chemo does have many negative thoughts. I know all cancers are different and everyone is effected differently but it gives hope thay not everyone does get badly effected.

    - i just wish they would start it. Time is ticking and my dad does get some pain, hes mainly on Codine but also has Tramadol when it flares up severly.
