Manual or robotic?

Hi

Having recently been diagnosed with intermediate grade prostate cancer, I’m to have a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in January. Two close relatives have had a prostatectomy in the last two years, one had open surgery due to additional problems but the other had a robotic (da vinci) laparoscopic procedure & insists this is the option I should go for. Unfortunately, my hospital does not yet have the da vinci equipment, coming next year apparently! So far, I’ve had every confidence in my Consultant who’s been very professional, accommodating & honest & I’m slightly loath to upset things or possibly delay my procedure by asking to be transferred to a hospital/consultant that uses the robotic system. I’ve attempted to understand weather or not robotic surgery really does offer significant advantages over the manual procedure but a lot of the internet information I’ve read so far seems to be either directly or indirectly involved with the equipment manufacturer & may therefore be biased!

So to my quandary; should I stick with the manual laparoscopic procedure I’ve been offered or ask to be referred to hospital that uses the latest robotic procedure? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Richard,

And welcome. I have read the equipment like the robot is only as good as the person operating it. You are also right about the information being provided on the internet being biased by the manifactures. I only take notice of sites like Cancer Research, Macmiilan or Prostate Cancer UK.

It is a difficult decision your are asked to make so I dont envy you. Wishing you all the best. Please let us know what you decide, Brian

  • My husband had this decision to make 3 yrs ago and he opted for robot. We did have a very qualified surgeon and I agree that's important   The recovery was so much easier than it would have been with open. That's of course just our experience and opinion.  He is considered cured at this point. Good luck.

  • Richard-  My brother had the robot or da vinci prostate surgery about 8 years ago. The purpose of robotic was the recovery time was shorter with this method. Very small incisions.  He is cured and healed quickly.  He was 58 when he had the surgery. Don't worry about upsetting your doctor, this is about what suits your needs best.  Good luck with your decision and wishing you a cancer free and speedy recovery.   Marilyn (brooks47)

  • My thanks to those who have replied. Just to clarify, I won't be undergoing "open" surgery but have been offered manual laparascopic (key hole) surgery as opposed to a robotic laparascopic proceedure as my current hospital doesn't yet have the da vinci equipment. I'm still no clearer on making a decision as it stikes me that with either proceedure, the outcome will only be as good as the consultant surgeon & I can't find any meaningfull information about him other than the number of proceedures he's performed in the last 12 months!

Can anyone advise their experience of manual key hole surgery? Weather the experienced side effects were any more or less serious with either proceedure?
