Radio iodine treatment

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and have had my thyroid removed and am now waiting for an appointment for radio iodine treatment.  I have had a look on the internet but there is lots of information saying different things about diet, length of stay in hospital, work (I work with children) and how many sessions of treatment that is given.  I have also seen two consultants who have said different things.  so I am very confused and just wondered if anybody could give me the benefit of their experiences or have proper information.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Maccadog!

We have some detailed information on radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer here.

I hope it will answer all the questions you may have but if you wanted to find out more about anything, don't hesitate to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I thought I would also let you know about this thread from last month which was written by someone who was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer and who was also about to start radioactive iodine treatment.

I am sure others will be along soon to share their own experience with you and they may be able to answer some of your questions.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Teresa I too have recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer I like you have had full thyroid removed and I am awaiting radio iodine treatment.  I have been told by my oncologist that I will be in hospital for 2 nights in isolation on release I won't physically be able to go back to work till a couple of weeks after treatment. Hope this helps.

  • Thank you that does help.  Can I ask how long you were off work and what you do as a job?
