Mums treatment

Hi,

Has anyone got any advice for us? My mum got her diagnoses yesterday and she is to have a mastectomy and then 6 months chemotherapy. I really don't know how she is going to cope. We lost my dad very suddenly 10 weeks ago and that is still ongoing as there is an inquest into his death in January. I really don't think she has the strength to fight this. I am so frightened, what can I do to help?

  • Kay, I don't know your mum but in all my 71 years I don't think I have found anyone who hasnt surprised me with their resilience.  We find inner strengths when we need to and learn to cope with whatever life throws at us. I am sure she will come thtough this better than you expect.  You have each other for support and I suspect you need some yourself.

Please come and chat to us, we really do help each other. x

  • Hi Pauline,

Thanks for your reply and support. I think all the family are in a state of shock and feel like we are being punished. At the moment we are back and forth with solicitor and coroner's office with the inquest into my dads sudden death and now this. My mum is only about 6 stone anyway and has very little appetite,  so am just imagining that when she starts her chemo she will just waste away.

  • Kay, I should think all those things will be taken into account.  There are many people on here who will help you with eating problems and different ways to encourage your mum to eat.  I know now is the wrong time but it might be a good time to try to encourage her to eat some nice things to build her up a bit. Don't look too far into the future imagining the worst - most time things work out better than expected. Take one thing at a time and cope with that.
