Bowel cancer

Hi I have just been diognised with bowel cancer., I had the operation but now it has spread to the liver, does anyone have this experience?

  • Hi - my father in law was diagnosed a few months ago and also had it spread to his liver.

After an op to remove a tumour from his bowel and a course of post-surgery chemotherapy, he will be having surgery tomorrow on his liver. Our understanding is that secondary’s spreading from bowel to liver are not uncommon. however the positive news is that in the months since diagnosis and chemo, the secondary’s in the liver have not 'grown' , ( probably impeded by the chemo) so the news is good.

It’s not been easy, it’s been up and down and uncomfortable for him. What I would say is this – there is a start point and an end point and in between the majority of the positive ‘stuff’ is medical or clinical (i.e. the operation went well, the scan revealed no tumour growth etc. etc.) these are all really significant successes, but I know my in laws have struggled to translate these medical outcomes into anything meaningful. So where they should be buoyed by this news, they often aren’t.

So – for what its worth, if I have any advice its ask LOTs of questions, if something isn’t clear ASK for an explanation until it is.

  • Hi my Nan was diagnosed in July she is 89 and refused the operation and is has also spread to her liver and she has a shadow on her lung she is in a nursing home but she has been so independent since my grandad died 10 years ago with cancer she won't let staff help her then she moans no one will help her, they said at the hospital with out treatment she will only service 6 months,I go every day as I am the only family here as the others are old an live away it's horrible,I hope your father in law is ok.
