Sister with newly diagnosed bowel cancer

Hi

My sister was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 26 years ago and has been living with a colostomy bag ever since. She was then re-diagnosed with Crohn's several months ago in the remaining part of her colon but she was also having lots of problems with pain etc in her bladder.  In May this year she had a bladder biopsy to check for cancer but this was clear.  She then was admitted to hospital in September to have the remaining part of her colon removec but the operation  was postponed for a week because there were no ICU beds available. When they did eventually operate they found they could not perform the planned surgery as she had bowel cancer that had spread to her bladder. This has now been staged at stage 4.

Is there any way of finding out how it was left to get this serious before anything is being done about it when she has had numerous scans and biopsies to investigate it?

Thank you

  • Hi jdjc

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis have very similar symptoms and 26 years ago diagnosis was not as good as it is today, it took the hospital over one year to diagnose my partner, so your sister may have actually had Crohn's disease all along. There is a small but increased chance of bowel cancer with Crohn's disease. Again diagnosing cancer is often a difficult process, even with biopsies scans and blood tests.it is often only found by chance during unrelated surgery. Your sister could formally write to the hospital asking them to look into her case to identify any failings in her care. Meanwhile you need to concentrate on the now and push to get the treatment your sister needs. All the best Kim
