Mesothelioma - Dad recently diagnosed

My dad has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer caused by asbestos exposure. We have been advised that he has 15 months, possibly 18 with palliative chemotherapy. I guess I'm just enquiring what I can expect with his illness as its all new to me. He has his first chemotherapy session next week, how is he likely to feel? I know it's different for everyone but a little insight would be great. Thank you

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum though sorry for the reason you find yourself here. As you say its not easy being specific as everyone responds differently.  My husband had the same diagnosis and his journey with Mesothelioma was just under three years.  He also opted to have palliative chemo when given the option. Unfortunately his body did not cope to well with the side effects and by joint agreement the treatment was stopped half way through, It is possible that your Dad's consultant will have explained possible problems and the chemo drugs are tailored to each person and is usually only given if pre-blood tests are ok. We had very good guidance from the chemo nurses (my husband received his treatment on the day ward and drove himself to and from treatment (side effects for him kicked in between 3/5 days after infusion)- mainly sickness and fatigue.  Always worth writing any questions down beforehand and we were given a 24hr phone number to call with any queries once treatment was under way. Coping day to day really depends on how your Dad feels and taking your guidance from him as his needs change may help. I joined the forum during my husband's journey and found good support here in being able to offload when times were difficult.

Am happy to answer any questions if I can be of help.   Regards  Jules54
