Partner had kidney cancer

Hi my husband had left kidney removed last year RCC. No symptoms, lucky find. Had not spread. CT scans every 6 months.  We're all clear but now say something tiny shown up on lung.  They leaving it till January.  Do a scan again then decide what to do. We so worried. Has anyone experince like this?  Should we get second opinion?

  • We were in the same boat. My husband had kidney and adrenal gland removed last year. Had CT scans every 4 months and now a year later cancer is growing in 4 places, including in the void left by the removal of the kidney.  We have just started on chemotherapy drug Sutent which hopefully will zap the cancer growth. He will take this until it stops working, 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off.  There are side effects which we are trying to cope with. Your treatment sounds exactly the same as ours. Cancer has to be actively growing to start in these drugs.  It was a wait and see situation. He has small lesions in the void, lung, between ribs and on the other adrenal gland but has had a good year since the operation.

  • Hi thanks for the info. I looked at the treatment Stutent. They won't do anything until they see if it grows.which is so worrying.

We are trying to stay positive. My husband is fit and is a rugby referee  so it's come out if nowhere.

    Hi,

I had a partial nephrectomy on my left kidney in Feb 2014. I had a tumour that was only found by luck on a scan for my lungs. My lungs were fine at the time and I recoverd from the kidney operation. On my follow up scan they found a nodule on my left lung (6 months) and two small ones on my right lung. On my second follow up (April 2015) the left nodule had grown and was 17 MM the right lung ones have not altered. They were going to leave this until next May 2016 ( renal consultants) but I went for a second opinion with a chest consultant and had a PET scan. This did not show the nodule in my left lung as cancer, at the time, but having had kidney cancer it can give a false reading!!! They also found something in my right thyroid which I am having removed on the 20th Nov.

We discussed the nodule with the consultants and I had it removed 9 weeks ago (left lower lobectomy). It was a slow growing tumour (carcinoid) only approx 1200 people are diagnosed with this a year. Basically the second opinion was the best thing I did. The lung and kidney cancers were not linked and hopefully the thyroid (papillary cancer) won't be either. I have not had any other treatments apart from surgery and hopefully this last operation will be the end of it.

I have asked to be referred to an oncologist when this is all finished just to get a final overview.

I would say 100% get a second opinion it is better to be safe and catch anything early!!

Good luck on your journey, it is hard I know as I am on it. Keep positive a and keep following things up.

    Tony

  • Hi and thanks for your reply. I rang the Royal Marsden Hospital and they have advised to ask our GP for second opinion.  Hubby will call him tomorrow.  Waiting 3 months just doesn't  feel right.

Good luck with your op. I wish you all the best. I have nodules  on my thyroid  and a growth but not cancerous.

I was told lots of people have them.

    Take care.

    Ann

  • Hi Ann,

That is good news, as you say three months is a long time and the doctor can get a second opinion sorted out.

I wish your partner all the best.

    Tony
