Hi Tcb,
I can confirm you wear ear defenders. Some hospitals even give you earphones so you ca listen to music. Trust me, there is nothing to worry about having had an mri scan when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It's soon over; wishing you good results, Brian.
I have them regularly and had my latest on Weds. You definitely wear ear defenders and dont be misled by the thought of a tube. I always imagined a closed in space but it is a wide open both end tube. On my first trip they were happy for my partner to stay in the room and touch my hand/head to show that I wasnt enclosed. Have no problems with them now at all. Good luck x
Hi there TCB, welcome to the forum. I just read your post and I'm puzzled, not only about your question about wearing ear defenders, or ear phones as I call them, but it seems as though Brian and Max also wore them when they had scans. I've had multiple scans, CT, MRI, PET scans, etc. and at no time did I wear ear phones of any kind. I would think they would be a hindrance to the instructions we're given while having the scan, i.e. when to breathe, when to hold it, or when to breathe normally. I don't find it all that noisy either, so wouldn't feel the need to have ear phones. Could there be a difference in the type of Scan Machines that we have as opposed to yours? I know some people do have issues with claustraphobia (sp) so more time is taken with them when they have scans. Other than that, I'm not aware that anyone in this Health Care System has a need for ear phones. I wonder why that is. I would like one of the moderators to perhaps explain this one.
Tcb, good luck with your scans next week. Come back on here and let us know how you get along.
Good to see you on here Max and Brian. Hope things are good with you guys.

Hi Lorraine,
I only wore the ear defenders when I had the MRI scan which was quite noisey even with them on. Plus as far as I can remember, I didnt have any instructions about breathing ect. Hope this helps.
Best wishes being sent your way, Brian.
Hello Lorraine,
I am not sure why this wasn't suggested where you live.
However in the UK, the radiographer may offer you ear plugs. It’s very much down to the individual having the scan and the hospital they go to. It isn’t a health risk to have a scan without ear protection - it’s just a matter of comfort.
I thought you might also be interested in reading this information from our site. It mentions that:
"The radiographer may offer you ear plugs or headphones to wear. MRI scans are very noisy. The noise is like a loud clanging inside the cylinder and it goes on throughout the scan. The radiographers prefer that you wear some sort of ear protection to protect your hearing and for your own comfort. And you may be able to listen to music while the scan is going on."
I guess listening to music might make it a more relaxing experience!
I hope this helps a little,
Lucie
Hello. I have had CT, MRI and a pet scan in the last 10'months and I had ear plugs and ear defenders for MRI, you don't have them for CT or pet scan as it is not noisy and you are given instructions to hold your breath etc. Also being quite deaf I had to remove hearing aids for MRI and for head scans in CT . Good luck! It is over quite quickly, if you are concerned about anything tell them and they will help in any way they can.
