I am a 65 years lady. with lung cancer. had op on 7 oct. at home recovering. and waiting result.  have to be cheerful for family.I am worried about chomo, have no  one to look after me. live on my own. how bad is it?

  • Hello Laughing Rose. (What a lovely name)  I had my op for non small cell lung cancer on the 2nd October so only a week before you. Like you I have been extremely lucky and got my all clear and have an appointment with the oncologist on Wednesday to discuss chemotherapy. Although I have supportive family and friends, again like you, I live alone so the thought of the effects of the treatment are very scary. Be good if we could stay in touch? Love Jan

  • hi jan.   yes its very scary. glad you got support.  start my chemo on the 16 nov. . its been a month since op. find it was hard. to tired to cook. and feel sick every day. could  not go to the toilet.  so I think chemo going to be like that .this week, I am getting energy drinks in, straws, water, and snacks. they given me a 24 hours    help line to ring. which is great. the hospital, doctors and nurses are great. its just the unknown. but   god willing I get through it.   the day I had the op. they went to take me down. the bed broke. they could not get the side out that you slide over to the op table. you got to laugh. they spent half an hour trying to mend it.  so a lady opposite me went to the toilet. while she away they swaped beds. any way do keep in touch love rose

  • Hello Rose. Your post made me smile in that, despite your situation you can keep a cheery disposition and I admire you for that. You have a date for chemo which isn't too far away now and you must be full of anxieties about the unknown just like me. I've got an appointment with oncologist on Wednesday and I have a list of questions to ask. I also have chronic constipation which makes me feel sick and have no appetite which I would like to be cleared before the process starts. I was told that chemo needs to start within a three month period after the operation and if this is correct, perhaps I'll get the opportunity to feel well for a short period of time before it starts. On another lighter note, did you watch the final episode of Downton Abbey last night? What did you think?

  • hi jan, yesI watched downton abbey. it was good. but I think its had it day.lady marys voice used to grate on my nerves. you cant beat upstairs/downstairs tv prog,.     like you haved constipation.my doctor gave me laxido orange sachet. they are very good. are you on pain relief. they gave me dihydrocodeine tablets. which makes you constipation. so I have cut down on them. the oncologist, wanted me to start chemo this week. I said no.  like you  wanted  a week feeling better. live on my own, so need this week to stock up on food. get some books to read and so on. my family think I am strong, but I am not. I draw my strength from god   I leave everythink in his hands    goodluck on weds. keep in touch. love rose

  • HELLO THERE LAUGHING ROSE I WAS WONDERING IF ANY ONE ON ERE CAN GIVE ME A BIT OF ADVICE FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT AND STUPID DONT NO WHAT TO DO

  • Hi Summersplash and hearbreaking2005

Just wanted to say to both of you that if y ou have real worries and concerns about yourself or loved ones in regards to health issues you could post your questions on the Ask the Nurses thread or alternatively give them a ring on the freephone number (from UK) at bottom of this page.

The only way for any proper diagnosis is to start with your GP (or your relative's GP). There can be many reasons behind being unwell/ symptoms and my husband's illness was found after treatment for a prolonged chest infection that failed to respond fully to antibiotics.

If you do have a query about something in particular it can be worth putting that in the title of your post so that others in similar circumstances will drop you a line.  Hope this helps. Jules54

  • Hi laughing rose. I have never had anyone in my family with lung cancer though have had many other cancers that have occured in my family. I have liver cancer and though i have not had an operation chemo at the start really freaked me out and i lost my husband 3 nearly 4 years ago to terminal prostate cancer. When i was diagnosed last year my family supported me a lot and the grandkids were just amazing with the amount of things they did with me and they really boosted me for chemo and my family were on call for me if anything happened they would be right there thy said dont matter if its 5am they would be there which was so lovely. Living alone for so long now i have learned that you just relax and do things that comfort you. by now im sure your back to normal but it helps. -Diane x

  • Hi heartbreaking2005 i would not worry about the lung cracklings as my sister has that and its been years and she has a persistant cough but thats just due to her smoking and she also has a hource voice. Although i would worry about the unexpected weight loss she shoudl visit her GP just incase there is anything behind it though -Diane
