Mum has breast cancer :(

hi all, hope your all doing ok. I'm brand new to all this. My mum has just been diagnosed with breast cancer (last Fri). I'm so scared for her, it's such an upsetting time and I feel helpless. We are not sure what type it is yet. She has a bone scan on Thursday and then a CT scan to see if it's spread, is this the norm?? I think she is possibly speaking to a surgeon next week. The lump is quite big. They have also taken samples from her lymph nodes and done other blood tests. Anyone in a similar situation please comment back. She is the 1st person iv ever known personally to have breast cancer. Something I never thought would happen to my mum x

    Hi Emma, sorry to hear about your mum and what a frightening time you are having. I am really glad that you have found this forum and have posted on here. There are lots of lovely people who will respond to you in the same situation. I have found it really helpful to talk to people outside of my own family. I have breast cancer and have had 2 surgeries this year and am now having radiotherapy. What I would say it that it gets less scary once you know what you are dealing with, this is a really good site for finding out information so once you know a bit more about the type of breast cancer your mum has do some reading on this site so that you understand more, this really helped me. Avoid all of the 1000's of wierd and wonderful 'cancer expert' sites and stick to this one or Macmillan! It is perfectly normal to have scans and tests to check whether there has been further spread- in the initial stages the DR's just want to find out as a much as they can so that they can plan the best course of treatment for your mum. I also had a bone scan and had lymph nodes taken, it's all about working out the scale of what they are dealing with. You will find there is lots of waiting for results in this process and that's the hardest thing but once everyone knows you can move on to treating the thing!  You are not alone, Come back and chat on here whenever you want, someone will always pop up to say hello.     Hi Emma, I am in exactly the same situation as you my parents told me and my sister that mum has breast cancer on Sunday just gone, my mum has her bone scan and CT scan today and I'm utterly terrified of what the outcome will be, it's all out of my control and I'm dreading the phone call from my dad, I've been an absolute mess since finding out crying all the time, I feel like cancer is everywhere every TV advert, the news the high street it's just there always reminding me of this a full thing, I've never known anyone to go through breast cancer either so no one to talk to, all my friends are being supportive but unless your experiencing it you really don't understand , when is your mums scans? Stay positive (she says while holding back tears herself!) Love Charlotte. X x x x x

    Hi Emma it can be a worrying time when diagnosed with Brest cancer I was diagnosed last October and have now finished treatment . It will depend on the type of cancer you mum has to the treatment she is offered. She will be given lots of scans to check that the cancer has not spread beyond the breast and biopsy on lymphatic system is a common and important check. Mum will proberly be given chemotherapy if the cancer is in lymph system as well as breast this will help shrink Tumor before surgery usually 6 cycles of chemotherapy every 3 weeks. Mum is going to be very tired and will have side effects depending on the drugs she is given and it more that likely she will loose her hair 10 days after first chemotherapy I shaved my head and wore pretty hats to go out and scarfs in the house to keep head warm be prepared for mum to be very upset at loosing her hair but it will grow back when chemotherapy has finished.  Emma just be there for mum to help with any support and she will get through this remember to ask nurses for advice and support and take every part of treatment one step at a time as it is too much to deal with it all at once deal with chemo first then surgery then any radiotherapy in separate steps and be prepared for mum to be at hospital for appointments and treatment nearly every week over next 12 months she will be very physically tired ( fatigue) all the time  during chemotherapy some days I managed just a shower before I was exhausted this is normal and it will pass after she has finished chemo I wish mum a all my best wishes xxx

    Hey I have just found myself in this same position, my mum was told her lump she had found in breast was cancerous after her first lots of scans etc, we are now sat waiting for the results to see what she has and what her treatment will be, this too is the only person i have known with breast cancer personally and the one person I would go to for reassurance and she is very much not wanting to talk about it and is clinging onto hope it will be ok and i really pray it will be but how scary eh, I hope you know a bit more about what your mum is dealing with as this short time has passed xxx
