My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer today

Hello, today is the 13th of October. A few weeks ago my mum discovered a bump under her armpit and decided to get it checked out. After a few hospital appointments, my mum of 50 years old confirmed to me after school today that she has breast cancer.

Luckily it is in its early stages and is treatable. Soon she will be put on medication to shrink the cancer cells in her breast and then she will have the cells removed.

My mum is quite a religious/ faithful woman (as am I), therefore when she told me the news she sounded upbeat.. even happy! Because she has faith in God and although the result is cancerous she has received the most positive result. She even said her doctor seemed happy.

In contrast, when I found out I started crying and my nose started bleeding heavily and I got a bad head (which I never get). My mum was shocked at my emotional reaction so that reassures me that the cancer isn't THAT bad (I think it's type 1?). She's promised me that she's not sad or upset in any way as she has faith in God and the doctors!

For a while now I have been feeling that my life is falling apart while everyone else's has been getting better. I'm 17 and I'm currently studying for my A Levels, applying for University and also juggling a job... and this news doesn't help anything. I'm very stressed out, sad and drained.

Sorry if I've rambled on, I don't really know how these posts work! I'm just looking for some advice and reassurance. Maybe you could share a couple of your stories? If you've read up to this point then thanks for reading! Have a blessed day or night ️x

  • Hello rebecca1998,

Welcome to our forum! We are sorry to hear your mum was diagnosed with breast cancer but it's good news that it was found in early stages and that it is treatable.

Of course this news will make you feel miserable but I hope you take strength from the fact that the cancer is only Grade 1 and that it can be treated. Perhaps you should mention your home situation to your school so that they are aware of what is going on at home.

If you want to understand your mum's cancer staging better and how it is going to be treated, do ring our nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. They can talk you through everything and answer any question you may have.

I will now let our wonderful community come and share their stories with you. Talking to them will no doubt make you feel better!

    Best wishes,
