Just diagnosed with breast cancer

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer, I'm worried about everything, not so much the surgery but after that, what other treatment I will have, that kind of thing. When I read what others are going through I feel a bit of a fraud for feeling so emotional. I would love to hear from someone who has had similar to me

  • Hi, hope you're doing ok and feeling better. I get all my results on Thursday but I'm not expecting anything too horrendous. I guess you have to wait again now for yours. Have a good week X

  • Hi Tracey and Rigsby, of course we don't mind you joining in, it helps to talk. I don't always get on here every day but try to check back as much as poss.

Rigsby, how did you get on with your results Saturday, I hope they figured out your plan, every area seems to work differently. I went straight to surgery without an MRI and get my plan this week which us 2 and a half weeks after surgery.

    Take care all

  • Hi Fabia, thank you for your reply.

I have to have one breast removed and nodes removed for testing.  I am booked in for surgery on 28th October so not long to wait.  I have been advised that chemo will probably start in December and maybe even after Christmas .  I have decided not to have reconstruction right now, I really did not know what to do for the best but wanted recover to be quick and to not possibly delay the chemo.  I was also advised that if I had to have radio therapy it could cause a problem if I've had reconstruction.

I have been told I will be in and out the same day which was a surprise but good news as I don't really want to have to be in hospital, how long is the recovery time after?

    How are you feeling?

Hi. Where abouts in Wales do you live? Just curious as I live in Walss and my mum just been diagnosed with breast cancer x

  • Hi Rigsby, that  must have been a huge shock for you, I think it helps a lot when you put it all in writing. You sound like you have it all figured out and like you say it's not too long to wait for surgery.

I think recovery time is different for everyone, I had a lumpectomy and nodes removed but stayed in one night following a reaction to the anaesthetic. I've been off work for 2 weeks but feel like I could go back now.

You sound like you're very fit which I'm sure will make a difference with recovery time.

Hang in there, I had lung cancer 3 years ago and recovered, now back on the roller coaster but it's amazing how resilient we become.

    Take care of yourself xx

  • Hi Fabia, when I was first diagnosed the doctor said I would have to have a mastectomy and chemo so to be honest I'd prepared myself for the worst so was a releaved that he said only one breast was to be removed even though that's bad enough!  I have my down moments but am grateful that as it is nothing is life threatening and I am reading daily about stories of ladies beating this.  Blimey you had lung cancer previously you poor thing having to go through this rubbish again but you also sound positive and strong, I know we'll all have our off days though.

    Take care xx

Hi ladies, my results are in after my second lumpectomy to get a clear margin and yet again no clear margin!,, so now advising me to have a mastectomy and reconstruction at same time. Totally shocked as didn't think this was gonna happen. Been offered recon using stomach fat and tissue etc but recovery time looks horrendous and all a few weeks before Xmas. So many questions for surgeon on Friday like why am I having that sort os recon when there are others using back muscle etc I'm totally shocked.

I'm more worried about the recovery than the op to be honest. Was not easy dropping this bomb on our families but we'll get through it,,,,!!!

  • So sorry to hear your news, j can understand you being devastated. I got my results last week and was told my lymph nodes are positive so I'm going back in a couple of weeks to have an axillary clearance. Not a good news week for either of us this week. Hope your appt with the surgeon goes ok xx

  •

Not the news either of us wanted but as I am beginning to learn ....nothing is what they say it's gonna be! I have my head round it now but now worrying about hubby who us desperate to help but simply can't! Would love to hear from others who have had the same op just to put my mind at rest

Fabia stay strong get the dreaded Xmas shopping going and plan something nice to do for after you recover from surgery xx

  • Hi scaredymummy,

Sorry to hear about your test results. Two years ago I had the DIEP flap. You are right to be concerned the recover is about three months. The stomach wound was the worst. I also had previous surgery 19 years before so ALS had to have skin grafts. If you are anywhere near Essex they hold a group and ladies go there so you can see the results. It was very emotional for me and I burst into tears. There was all these ladies there all ages and sizes. I was taken into a private room ans was shown a very good recon. After the op I felt like I had been hit by a herd of elephants. My previous treatment included surgery chemo and radio. That was a walk in the park. Please try and do your research h and go with the op you feel happiest with. I pushed for a specific surgeon and I think this was his forte so he also did not consider the back option. If I can help you in any way I will. Good luck to you
