Thyroid cancer. When can I see my baby?

Hi everyone. I have just been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I am due my second operation soon to remove the remainder of my thyroid then I will be having radio iodine. I have a 10 month old baby and wondered how long realistically it will be before I can see her after the radio iodine?  Any help would be great. I'm so worried about this. Xx

  • Hi Flicob0707,

Welcome to the forum. We have lots of information on our website about thyroid cancer which may be of help to you. Unfortunatley it doesn't answer your specific question about how soon you'll be able to see your little girl again. We do have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK and I'm sure that they would be able to help with some more specific information.

You can post in our Ask the Nurses topic area although they sometimes can take a couple of days to respond if they're really busy. Alternatively you could give them a call and chat to one of them. They are available Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (free to call from a UK landline).

I'm sure that however long you need to be apart from her will feel like too long but whilst you're waiting for cuddles with her again would it be possible to keep in touch using Skype or something similar?

Do keep in touch and let us know how you're doing when you are able.

    Sending you our best wishes,

  • Thank you for replying so quickly. I will contact the nurses. Thank you so much. Im definitely panicking about being away from her so Skype or something  would be a great idea. Thanks x

  • A friend had this treatment and the advice was to not be in contact with small children for two weeks, adults a bit sooner. Your hospital should have given you information, give them a call on Monday. You should also have been given information regarding breastfeeding. The Skype idea is great. Wishing the time passes quickly for you till you can cuddle her again. Kim
