Mastectomy and how it is after

I I had routine mammogram in May and recalled for biopsy, which showed Dcis I then had wire fitted and tissue removed , had a really large haematoma and took over two weeks to feel better, then I had to have second op as needed more margin, went back for results yesterday and although low grade and non invasive have been told need a mascetomy, quite a shock as I was thinking radiotherapy like they said or medication, I am not sure whether to have reconstruction but feel due to back problems and bad reaction after op, maybe not bother, am worried about coming home with drains and how I will feel after? Any advice I know it's my decision but if anyone has felt same it may help thank you

  • Hi Mags60, I don't normally respond to messages, but I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS back in 2013, and as a result had a mastectomy, with immediate reconstruction by LD Flap, and I have to say I am regretting that decision, as I have had been experiencing discomfort and soreness from the operation since, having had repeated visits to my consultant and then referred to a pain specialist, as a result given an epidural, which has had no effect, for what it is worth if you already suffer with back problems, I would not recommend LD flap,... as far as drains go, mine were removed in hospital (but very painful to remove after 5 days), I am sorry I can't give you a positive response, but I am a pretty healthy, active lady in her early 50s and I would not want anyone to suffer the same if it can be helped.... I wish you all the very best whatever your decide, and I for one class myself as lucky not having undergone any further treatment or medication...  xxx :)

  • Thanks for your reply, I already have decided to have no reconstruction, and as am not so fit as yourself I think this decision is probably wise. It's scary all the unknown things that come into your mind. I hope and wish you well, and that your pain eases,
