Hello Paul, welcome to the forum, but sorry for the reason you are here. I would suggest you post your question in the category, "Ask the Nurses" and you will get a proper answer. Or, you can call them during business hours at the number at the bottom of this page. Those of us here on this forum are not medical people so really can't answer questions concerning diagnosis. We can only share our experiences about the cancers that we ourselves have, but nothing medical. We are here for emotional support though, so come back on and let us know how you get along.
Take care
Lorraine
Hi Paulc73,
Thank you for posting. Your question has been passed to the nurses for an answer.
Looking for Bence Jones protein (BJP) in urine is a specific test which doctors request if there are symptoms which may suggest multiple myeloma. Finding BJP in the urine is not something which will on its own diagnose myeloma because other tests will be needed to do this.
There are other blood conditions which can produce BJP in the urine. Unfortunately, though, this is usually a sign that there is a cancer affecting the blood or lymphatic system (a drainage system which is like the blood system). If the test has been requested by your GP then you will be referred to see a Haematologist at your local hospital. They will be able to arrange more tests to work out what has caused it to be in the urine. If you are already seeing a Haematologist then you will have more tests arranged and the doctor will be able to talk to you about what they think has caused it.
It is likely that you will be given the contact details of a specialist nurse who works with the medical team. Once this happens do phone them and ask them any questions that are worrying you. They will also be able to discuss with you which tests the doctor may have planned for you.
You might find it helpful to call us, we are here Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm on our Freephone number 0808 800 4040.
Kind regards
Deborah
