How were you informed you have cancer?

I ask this question as I found out that I had cancer when I opened a letter from the hospital while drinking my morning coffee. The news took some digesting and I was unable to tell anyone 'till my partner got home from work. I am told this is unusual but I have since heard that others have beed told over the phone or called in to see their doctor or asked to come into hospital to discuss the results of their tests. So how did you receive the news that you have cancer?

  • I know some of these posts are older now, but how are people now through their journey? Thoughts are with everyone going through whatever we are all going through.

  • Finished my chemo last November, got my hair back and feel good. Unfortunately, on my second follow up appointment I discovered another lump in my neck, after the usual biopsies, it had came back, no treatment required atm so I'm on watch and wait and get checked every three months. Feel good and no "B" symptoms so I'm just enjoying life and hope it continues like this for a long time.

  • Oh scones so sorry.

How come it doesn't require treatment at the moment?

Keep fighting and I'm sure it will continue for a long time. Much virtual love coming your way xoxoxo

  • Hi everyone.

Not been on for ages. Now 2 years since finishing treatment for breast cancer. Everything is going ok.

Got my yearly mammogram on Friday.

I struggled with my mental health during treatment still have bad days with that.

    Hope everyone is doing ok.

    shirley xx

  • Hi Shirley.  Wow that's amazing news :0) thank you for sharing.

Good luck for Friday I can't imagine the anxiety you must feel with it coming up.

I am not surprised to hear you've struggled I am struggling now and I haven't been diagnosed with anything... yet... Mondays my appointment day.  Hard to stay positive in the mind when it's racing around doing it's own thing!

  • Macgyver.

    Good luck for Monday.

Will let you know what the results are when I get them. Xx

  • I've got a rare type of lymphoma and they don't do treatment till it gets worse, I know that sounds crazy but it is the way they deal with lymphoma, loads of people are on watch and wait and some never need treatment. I was stage 3/4 but atm it's only stage 2.

  • Over the phone, shocking

  • Hi I'm really sorry to hear your news and how you have been told. My Dad found out by letter that he had a lesion on his brain which they suspected was lymphoma and he was being referred to neurosurgery . Since January he's had scan after scan bit no communication in between. We didn't know who his consultant was. After phoning around many secretaries I finally found his consultant and spoke to the secretary. She said she had sent an appointment out for a telephone call with the consultant in 3 weeks. I was kind of hoping as it's in 3 weeks and a telephone call that it would be good news. After reading this I'm wondering if we should be with him when the telephone call takes place? Do you think it would be left this long if it was serious?

  • My step dad found out New Year's Day he had cancer on a letter in the post. I think it's outrageous that it could not of been done in a more dignified manor. I understand there's Covid but a telephone call would have been more appropriate. Sadly this week my step dad has received another letter basically explaining that the cancer isn't curable now when it was back at the start of the year.
