doctors unsure as to where cancer is coming from

Hello to you all

I was diagnosed with cancer about 10 weeks ago, and would like to ask if anyone out there is going through the

Same as me. I was diagnosed with cancer but the doctors do not know where this is coming from. I have an 8 inch lump I'm my abdomen. I am currently being treated for testicular cancer in hope that this is where it has started. Chemo seems to be working has can see and feel that the tumor has shrunk.

  • Hi David,

From what I can gather this is unusual but not unknown.Usually the origin can be identified from the microscopic examination of the cancer cells as each has a different shape and size, but not always.

The important thing is that the chemo is working for you :-)

    Cheers
    Dave

  • I've had the same looking to start chemo in a week but in meantime have had my notes sent for 2nd opinion to 3 hospitals my oncologist at our local hospital agreed.  I didn't realise you could get more than one opinion.  Sent on Monday this week and I have bugged one of the hospitals already and I believe I will get a phone call tomorrow but I also have the number of the secretary to bug.  I have also asked for all my medical notes incase I want in the future to see someone privately.

  • Hi Dave, I was diagnosed with cancer of an unknown primary ( CUP)in January 2015. I'm on my fifth round of six chemo's for a 6cm pelvic tumor and a small tumour in my hip bone. After three lots of chemo my scan showed the tumour had reduced in size now 3.7 cm. There is a test you can have although the NHS support the test they do not fund the cost. If you google LAB 21 you will see they can carry out further test on any biopsy that you have already had and there is a 85% chance they will find where the primary came from. Mine came back 90% lung, when this was discussed with my oncologist she did say that the treatment I am on would have been no different had they had known. We had this test done for our own piece of mind and knowing I'm on the right treatment has eliminated one area of worry. I know this is a very dark time and you feel almost helpless however if the chemo is doing the job it maybe like me you are on the right treatment.. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Michele

  • I'm going to look into the Lab 21 how much was it?
