my mum has breast cancer...please help

hi

i found out yesterday my mum has breast cancer. she is keeping positive that they have caught it early on and that it is surivable. she also has a lump at the bottom of her back which she is waiting on results for. i am praying it is just a cyst or something..

im trying my best to be strong for her but im so scared and worried.

she has lumps in both breasts. she has been told to give up smoking and to also cut back on drinking alcohol.

has anyone else been through this? i could really do with talking to someone who is or has been through something similar.

my husband is being really supportive im just trying my best to stay strong and positive.

thanks for reading x

  • Hi Maxine, I am so sorry to hear of your Mums recent diagnosis, no wonder you are scared. It is very hard to be told this kind of news and equally difficult for family & friends.

I cannot comment on the lump on her back but have my fingers crossed for her results when they come through.I do know about bilateral breast cancer though, as I was myself diagnosed in February. You do not say what type/s of cancer have been found but, as you have said, when caught early it can be treated.

My particular route was surgery, radiotherapy and then hormone therapy and I believe that this is fairly standard treatment but of course everyone is given their own plan according to their individual case.

As everyone here will testify, waiting for the next step is hell and all you can do is keep supporting your Mum as best you can and try to do some fun things together to distract yourselves in the meantime.

I cannot pretend any of it is easy and I have gone from total despair to being positive and everything in between, several times over. But, I have now almost completed my radiotherapy and will start on the hormones late next week and am still here to tell the tale!

Once the shock has worn off a bit and your Mum has a plan in place, it will get a little easier I promise.

Please come back with any questions you might have, or simply to rant & rave. This is a great site full of wonderful people who know what you are going through so we are all happy to help.

Take care and all the very best.  Sue xx
