Rare cancer

Hi I'm new my name is mary', my hubby has just been diagnosed with small cell postrate cancer which has spread to the bone. Chas anyone ever come across this we are told it is so rare. I'm just at mt wits end so is he. Thankyou

  • Hi Mary,

Welcome to this friendly forum. I know how your husband must be feeling as I was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago, Luckily thanks to my wife insisting I went to my gp, it was caught early and treatment was sucessful. I can understand you must both be very concerned but treatment for prostate cancer has improved vastly over the past few years. As I understand it, treatment for small cell prostate cancer is usually chemo and possibly radiotherapy. Hormone therapy doesnt seem to be very effective for small cell prostate cancer but might be offered.

Once a treatment plan is in place and treatment started, it will feel less stressful I promise. It is alway a very worrying time when you have just been diagnosed and are waiting for further tests or the results. I would advise, if you are looking for more information on your husbands cancer type, that you restrict your searh to well know sites like Cancer research, Macmillan or Prostate Cancer UK. I did what most people do to get more information and searched many differnt sites. Some of the information was years out of date while others were biased toward a particular treatment, and other were quite missleading. So please dont make the same mistake as me.

Wishing you and your husband all the best, and please keep in contact to let us know how you are both getting on. I am not an expert but if there are any questions you want to ask, please feel free to do so.

Take care, best wishes and kind thought sent your way, Brian

  • Mary I am so sorry to read you post, I know how upsetting it is to be told that it is a rare cancer because you just don't know where to turn.  Be guided by what Brian says and don't read random websites, they really can upset you as I have found.

Please stay in contact and let us know how things are.I

    Mary

  • Hi Mary,

Just wanted to wish you well for today and lets hope the results are good ones. As I said, Once treatment starts you will both feel more positive for you feel something is being done. Its the waiting around waiting for test and results that is the worst time.

Take care, will be thinking of you both, Brian.

  • Thankyou Brian , we will be leaving shortly not looking forward to it at all. Feel sick to the pit of my stomach, as you say it will be the start of getting rid of this big c. I'll bi in touch. Thanks for your words of encouragement.

    Mary

  • Well Brian , back from hospital with a bit of positive news. The small cell is very minute so there not going to start chemo just yet, there going to keep a close eye on him. We go back in 6 wks for further check up so he will be closely watched. Thankyou for your support I can honestly say it got me through the past few days.

  • Hi Mary,

Thanks for the update and I am glad you have had  good news. Some cancers can be very slow growing so lets hope your husbands is one of those. Thank for the kind words.

Sending best wishes to you both, Brian.

  • So pleased to see your positive news, Mary, you both must be very relieved. Best wishes for the future.

  • Hello Mary,

i came across this post from a few years ago. You say your husband cancer had spread to the bone but was slow growing small cell which is rare, if read it correctly no immediate treatment.

i am where you were almost when you posted the post in 2015 so you will know how you felt, I have had a scan today and am awaiting the results, all my previous PCa tests have shown a low PSA and a satisfactory DRe but the symptoms have been strong enough to get a scan.

i am concerned I may have the rare kind of prostate cancer as it seems that these versions do not increase PSA.  I have bone pain in my back so am very worried it had spread already.

How did the treatment work out?

    thanks for reading my post.

    alan
