prostate cancer newly diagnosed.

I am the wife of a newly diagnosed husband with Prostate cancer. We are now awaiting tests scans and so forth to see if it has spread. The doctor said his Gleason score is 8 and his psa was 12.9. His father died from results of Chemo damaged heart fro the same cancer two other brothers are both being treated for same. One brother had a prostectomy the other is waiting to see if his PSA comes back high and will have a biopsy. This seems to be gentetic and very aggressive. I am so knocked out by this I also have my only family member left my sister with months to live from colon cancer. My Dad died from Lymphosarcoma at 49 and my two brothers died from other things at 26 &33  my mother passed in 2003 so now its only me left after my sister passes.I have a 23 year old son how soon should he start cancer testing for prostate? I can't tell you the stress I feel right now my husband is 66 I am disabled at 61 have been since 49. What are the odds this has spread since his gleason score is high?  Also what life epectancy can we expect if we choose hormone and radiation? Thank you Carriefornia

  • Hi,

I am so sorry to hear about how hard you family has been hit bt cancer. My father who lives in Canada also had prostate cancer several years ago but also made a good recovery. My brother in law is also battling it but after having chemo, has been told it has not worked.

I also was diagnosed with prostate cancer over six years ago with a psa od 70 and a gleeson of 3+3=6. After two years of hormone therapy (Zoladex) and 37 radiotherapy my psa dropped to the lowest they can measure 0.01.

Sending best wishes to you and your husband and will hope it is still contained within the prostate. Please let us know how you get on when you can, Brian.

  • Hi carriefornia, Being the other person  is difficult, its feels so helpless, you've had more than your fair share to deal with allready.

My hubbies gleason score was 7. he was lucky enough to be offered a prostectomy. At histology it was widespread thoughout the prostate and aggressive but luckily  still contained within the gland. That was 6 years ago and he has been fine to date, fingers crossed.  I don't think you  will get a prognosis or treatment opinons untill the remaining tests and scan are known.  Waiting for results is awful, being in no mans lands allows the mind to run riot, try not to jump the gun, easy said than done I know.

Heard a talk on genetics at a prostate support meeting. The opion seemed to be that PSA from around 40 years plus is several close relative had been diagnosised at a young age. Views vary whether this is pre 60, 55 or 50 years of age!!  So hopefully grandchildren before needing to be concerned.

Thank goodness prostate cancer is getting more attention from organizations such as Cancer Research, so hopefully by the time your son needs to think about things there will be more ways of testing this disease.

Fingers crossed for you husband's results, take care, gardenlady
