Triple negative breast cancer.

Hi. I have just found out that someone very close to me has triple negative breast cancer, and has just found out she has the BRCA 1 gene. Her mother died of ovarian cancer last year. My friend had 2 mammograms, both clear, and when she found a lump it was diagnosed as a cyst. She went to have it drained and it was a cyst, but the lump behind it was not. She started chemo 2 weeks ago and has already lost her hair. I am in the UK and she lives in the States so I feel pretty helpless. I have been all over the net like a rash, but cannot find a glimmer of hope anywhere. I searched this site and could not find a post about triple negative cancer under 4 years old. I need to know if there is hope out there. My friend is 43 and physically fit. Please, is there any optimistic news?

  • Hello, I too was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and know how anxious you must be feeling for your friend. No there is not alot on the internet with long term survivers of this form of breast cancer but it doesnt mean that there arn't. If your friend carried the BRCA gene then she would be best considering a double masectomy and ovarian removal as I have been told this significantly reduces the chance of reocurrance. The scary thing about this form of cancer is there are no pills like hormone driven ones so it is the waiting game to see if it comes back. I assume they found it early if so they can treat successfuly these days, well they can in the UK im not sure what treatments are available in the USA.

Hope you feel more reassured soon x

  • Your friend could jointa group on fb called YBCN younger breast cancer network. Plenty of women who are TN on there who your friend could have a chat with....all is not lost just cos a person is TN :-)
