Advanced bowel cancer

Hi my family are going through hell at the moment as my mum has recently been diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer with spread to liver and lungs, her only symptom for now is her anaemia, we are all scared and worried what is going to happen. She is 55 and is in general good health, can anyone help me or has anyone been through this? X

  • Hello Mndy020,

Welcome to Cancer Chat and I'm sorry to hear of your Mum's recent diagnosis.

We do have a number of members here who I'm sure will post soon to share their experiences of bowel cancer.

I just wanted to let you know in the meantime that we have a great team of nurses that you can call to speak to if you think it would be helpful to chat with one of them about your concerns and questions.
They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 which is free to call from a UK landline.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sorry to read about your mum's diagnosis. I can relate to your post as I am in a similar position to your mum, though I'm slightly younger.

Has your mum been offered any treatment options? I've had various surgical procedures, so if surgery is an option for your mum and you have any questions, please ask and I'll try to answer them.

Like your mum, I'm in general good health too and I'm often told that I look well!

I hope your mum's medical team can help treat/control your mum's anaemia. They may also be able to answer your questions about your mum's case if she gives her consent for them to share information with you.

Please post as often as you need to if it helps to offload here.

Sending kind thoughts to you and your family, Jo x

  • Thank you for your kind words, she has been to see the oncologist today and she will start chemo in 2 weeks once her canulers is in, they said her anaemia is improving from her last blood test today and is gaining weight slightly. I am now praying that they can shrink or stop the tumour in time and rid her of the secondary cancers. Best wishes and thinking of you and your family also xx

  • Good morning Mndy,

Glad your mum's anaemia is improving and she's beginning to gain weight too.

if I can offer any support to you over the coming weeks, please post anytime.

I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and hoping your mum's chemo goes well.

    Take care, Jo xx

  • Thanks Jo, we are all hoping and praying it goes well, thank you for all your support on here as at the moment we are all in the dark with this. How are you getting on now? Hope you are ok? X

  • Hi,

I'm doing ok thank you. Currently waiting for some recent scan results which is a tricky time in the process!

But I'm distracting myself by having a good old spring clean! ;)

I'll look out for updates about your mum and how her chemo is going and remember to take care of yourself too.

    Jo xx

  • Hi Mndy

I've not been on the forum for quite a while, but wondered how things are going?

  • Hi my mum is on her 3rd chemotherapy, she is very tired and emotional and having frequent bowel movement. She has 3 more to go before her scan. How are you? X

  • Hi  Mindy welcome here .we are so sorry for you all. Anne my wife had this -the worry of it all has to be appreciated!  So have an idea of how you all feel. We hope the chemo goes well- it isn't a bad time as she will meet others having chemo and can natter. The oncologists are good and lets hope will shrink the growths.  Glad she looks well. Yes Anne always looks cool - no one would belive she has a serious illness. We will be thinking of you all on this new journey together.

    All the very very best

  • Yes Anne found chemo very tiring .roll on to number six so she gets the scan.  They will want to push the chemo to nine or more I bet.  So if mum gets increased side effects- then don't forget to let the onc know -so the dose can be monitored.

Thinking of you all at this time

    Xx steven
