Hair after Chemo

Hello All

I have been reading some information about hair after chemo although I have quite a few sessions left to go (7) but there's nothing like looking ahead (no pun intended), could anyone let me know if when their hair came back if it came back their original colour or came back grey as I have just started losing mine and this is after one session number 2 next week what joys. I think I will lose it all by the time I have finished so will wait and see next week what happens and if need be just have it all shaved of rather than waiting to have a few strands left.

Look forward to hearing about your experiances

  • Hi Littlesis

Mine grew back but with differences! I was origionally brown with bits of grey then it came back very, very grey but it has now gone back to brown but with a bit more grey than before! My hair was wavey and very thick it now corkxcrew curls and very thick! The corkscrews are so thight my hair dosen't seem to grow........ had last chemo Sept and have only had hair cut once! fortunately I've always had short hair!!!

I shaved mine directly after the second chemo, despite it being short I was covered in hair like wearing a scarf and when I started eating it, I figured enough was enough! Its not the best feeling in the world but once its done I was left wondering what I'd been so worried about, the thought is defenately worse than the reality.

All the best with your chemo, hope you don't have to bad a time.

  • hi little sis

Mine has grown back white / grey ( although prefer to say strawberry blonde he he he he) with black undertones at the back of my head. But hey ho . It used to be mousy brown with the odd bit of grey strands. (i'm 42) All the best with the chemo and take care.

  • Hello

Thanks ladies for your posts, it does help and give me hope, I am experiencing a pain on my scalp it's like when you get sunburnt on your head and I am wandering whether just to shave the hair now or wait and see what happens, think I might wait a couple of days as my pillow was covered in hair this morning.

I will let you know how it goes

  • I felt a geat relief when i stopped moulting like a cat - and felt much better. It used to drive me round the bend seeing hair everywhere. Of an evening there would be a little pile on the sofa where I had sat. I used to get the hoover out loads through the day, anyway....

I understand your feeling of your head feeling sore. I described it like when we shave after putting cream on - it felt like it would come out easy and hurt if Ii moved , coming out too easy. Once out, you and your head should feel better - I hope.

Wishing you all the best on your chemo. Do let us know how you are getting on.

  • Hello littlesis

just about to log off and saw your post. If it's any help i am 43 and my hair came back the same colour with a little touch of grey which had always been there I guess but I have always colour it so it's been a long time since I seen those horrible grey ones. Lol

the only thing that has changed for me is that I had very long and straight hair without kink or bend in it but to my surprise it's now about 4 inches long and curly! Another friend who had Gond through the same as us has also had hers come back curly so you might have a little surprise once it comes back.

Hope this helps you and here if you need to talk.

  • Hi.

Since treatment begun, I have lost all of my hair twice and gone completely bald. But it's starting to grow back now, as my treatment isn't so intense any more. My hair was thick before it all happened and it's grown back thick, so it's not really changed. I have always had dark hair and that's not changed, either. But when it was falling out and when I was almost bald, it used to hurt when I was in bed and felt like someone was pulling on my scalp.

When I first shaved it off, I waited until it was down to a few thicker strands of hair around my head. I didn't find that too difficult but when it was still thick and started dropping out, I found that worse. Brushing my hair and seeing large amounts fall out, was honestly devastating. But I got used to it and had fun with scarves, experimenting on covering my baldness.

    Hope you're doing well.

  • Hi, i'm 45 and my hair has grown back in much better condition than before. although it is now curly (it was quite straight before) and my son says i look like wolverine. but nothing that a pair of hair straighteners can't sort out. It was also really grey at first but its much darker now and i quite like it. Its always been quite short but when it started falling out i was devastated that was my lowest point i did shave the last strands off because they was making me look ill. but now treatments finished and trying to move on . Hope your doing ok .... :)

  • Good Morning All

Firstly I would like to thank you all for your replies.

Once again my pillow had quite a bit of hair on it and my brush full of hair once i brushed it, I think I will wait a while befor I choose to shave it all of as I may get another week or so lol, vanity hey. This will give me the opportunity to go out and buy a few scarfs etc any ideas on where to get some from, I know you can order them on the internet but what about the shops as then I can have a day out shopping as it is then a good excuse to have the husband to spend his money ha ha.

Take care everyone and I will let you know how it all goes as I might need some support when I have to have it shaved

  • Hello Again

If its any help my hairdresser has had several clients who have gone through the same as us and has been asked by all to shave it all off. She did advise me that this is quite a harsh thing to do and I am glad I listened to her as having such long hair. I had it cut to my shoulders firstly, then just before the chemo started I had a very funky short bob which looked fab and then as the very first few hairs started to come out she gave me a french crop and I have to say I was surprised how much it suited me! This took nearly 2 months to fall out so I was glad of the covering.

Even when the hair kept coming out mine fell out very evenly and I lost about 95% and the bit that was left was very fine and short. You must do what feels good for you but I am glad I did mine this way as it was less traumatic for me and keeping that last little lot saw me through until it came back.

    Love

  • Hi Jules1

Thank you for your advise, I did have long hair but had it cut short about 5 weeks ago on the advise of the Breast Nurse's. Although this did upset me and I hated the new hairdo at first, I have come round to it and everyone say's they like it but you feel they are just being kind as I have not had short hair for about 20 years.

I will wait and see how it goes and maybe give my hairdresser a ring to see what she says to me, I am hoping it will slow down but like they say the more you worry so I am now going on the positive mode and what will be will be life is to short and like everyone has said it grows back and hopfully to my original colour without the grey lol. Well I can live in hope ha ha.

    Speak to you soon
