Rectum cancer stage4

Hi everyone,

I am new. My husband is going for his first Chemo tomorrow( 4th Feb 2010). I don't really know what to expect. I am nervous, in the mean time I feel relieve that he is getting the treatment (at least). It is worried that he is getting tired and cannot really do much. We used to go for running and walking but he cannot manage that now. We dared not to ask the onco doctor what is the chances. We still unable to come to the term that his had a cancer and it spread to his liver. He is bleeding from his back passage every time he goes to the toilet.

Anyone would like to share the experience please!! I am kind of lost!! I am ethnic minority, my husband is my life line. Thank you!!

  • Hi

welcome to the site. I too have rectal cancer which was diagnosed last June . I've had   my radio/ chemo  and then in november 2011 I  had my operation to remove the cancer - i now have a permanent colostomy as my back passage was removed. You are on a roller coaster journey at the moment but it does get easier in a way once you know properly what you are dealing with and the treatment begins . My cancer is stage 3 but i'm sure there will be lots of people on the site shortly who have experience of stage four. Another good website for support  is Beating Bowel Cancer where you will meet people who will support you . take care

  • Hi,

I am in a similar position, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer which had spread to the liver in January 2010.  He has had no surgery but has been on chemotherapy on and off since then.  Symptoms at the outset were similar to your husband's (bleeding, fatigue etc).  The first few months of chemo were tough but then he was on a different therapy for a year.  Things are getting a bit harder again now.

I think a lot of people find the initial diagnosis a lot to cope with at the beginning so do not wish to know exactly what is likely to happen, but once the treatment starts you will both feel more positive, I hope.  It's good to know that things are being done to help you both.

It is hard when you feel isolated I know - we live outside the UK and are in a minority group where we live - but there are plenty of people on this forum who will help you.
