DCIS diagnosed today

After a rollercoaster few weeks, being recalled from my mammogram, having an ultrasound and biopsy and being told at that appointment to expect a cancer diagnosis. At the results appointment I was told its not cancer, its a grade b3 radial scar but need a vacuum biopsy to confirm but told iys highly unlikely to find cancer. Had results today and its DCIS low / intermediate grade. I asked the stage but he said there isnt one. The dr and nurse were very reasurring and the dr described it as on one side of the scale theres incurable brain cancer but mine is right at opppsite end of scale. He also said that there are large scale studies taking place to try find out the chances of these cancers becoming invasive and some countries dont remove them, just monitor but that they always remove them when they diagnosis them.

I know it could be a lot worse but i am still feel really anxious about it. Especially as they told me at the appointment after the first biopsy that it wasnt cancer, I am worried they have this wrong.

Also its nearly 5cm long but very thin  so i am worried about the length of it.

If anyone had experienced similiar, it would be good to hear.

Thanks

  • Hi Worriedmam,

What a rollercoaster few weeks it has been for you and after all this uncertainty you finally have a diagnosis and I hope that what the doctor and nurse have said has reassured you a little. It is a lot of information for you to have to take in right after a diagnosis and it can all feel overwhelming and it is completely normal to feel anxious despite the doctors' reassuring words. It might help to read our section on ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

You have come to the right place to meet others who have been diagnosed with DCIS in the past and if you type in the keywords 'DCIS' in our forum search which is located at the top of the page, you will find other threads from members who have had this diagnosis and feel free to respond to any that you feel you would like to connect with. I found for example - but it is only one example amongst many - this High Grade DCIS thread by  , a member who was diagnosed 5 months ago with DCIS and who will understand how you are feeling at the moment and hopefully they can offer insights into what to expect in the coming weeks and perhaps also share treatment experiences.

I hope that you feel a bit less anxious soon once you get all the details as to what to expect and that you will hear from others on here who have had DCIS before.

Wishing you the best of luck for your treatment - I hope that it all goes well for you!

    Best wishes,
