Feeling overwhelmed - is it normal to have no support after being diagnosed with cancer? I'm waiting to see an oncologist but that won't be for another month

I had an operation in July to have a lump and 1/2 of my thyroid removed. After a really long 7 weeks wait the results came back as cancer. This was at the start of September Since this I’ve been waiting for an appointment with an oncologist. I had notice that this would be at the end of November. I was told that they think that they got all of the cancer cells during the procedure which I’m thankful for, I guess what I’m saying is I’m struggling with the waiting of what happens next? My emotions are all over the place and I’ve had no support since this news was delivered?
is this normal practice? It’s still the not knowing and having to wait I hate.

  • Hello Devon-Queen58 and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm really sorry to hear how long you had to wait to find out you had cancer, and the lack of support you've had since you were diagnosed.

Coping with a cancer diagnosis can be very tough but I'm glad you've reached out to us as so many of our members will know what you're going through, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to offer their support and advice.

I hope this information we have about how cancer can make you feel and managing your emotions will help but if you would like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. The helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and our nurses will do all they can to support you and answer any other questions you may have at this time.

If you haven't done so already, make sure you speak to your GP as they will be able to offer further support and make you aware of any support groups in your local area that you could attend and connect with others who are also on this journey.

Do keep posting if you find it helps Devon-Queen58 and remember, we are here for you and will be by your side every step of the way.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
