Terrified

I was finally given a diagnosis after 7 weeks of what I can only describe as what feel La like a rollercoaster ride in the middle of a horror movie. They kept changing the decisions as to what was to be biopsies first, repeat biopsies, repeat scans etc before finally being diagnosed stage 3B NSCLC

Although I have just turned 70 I was until this diagnosis very fit with no other health issues.

I have been told combined radical radiotherapy and chemotherapy over a 4 week period is my best treatment option.

They used the word cure, however I realise that survival rates for this type of cancer are low, 20-30% over 5 years.

I am terrified that this combined treatment will leave me physically impaired and while of course I want to live, the quality of my life matters.
I’m finding it so difficult to deal with my family’s emotional distress and I absolutely do not want to cause any more if I can help it.

Has anyone any advice?

  • Hello Jax27

I'm sorry to hear that you've been on a real rollercoaster of a journey to get a clear diagnosis of your cancer. It sounds like it's been a difficult time, and it's understandable that you're worried about the impact treatment may have on your health, as well as being worried about your family.

Have you been given contact details for a specialist cancer nurse? Or do you have another appointment planned before treatment starts? Don't be afraid to reach out to the nurse if you have one or to ask the doctors at your next appointment about your concerns. It's good to know that you were in good health prior to this diagnosis, and hopefully that will stand you in good stead as you go through treatment.

With regard to your loved ones, it sounds like you are a very close-knit family, and hopefully they will be able to channel their energies into giving you practical support throughout your treatment. Learning that a loved one has cancer can be a real shock, and often there are questions and concerns ahead of the loved one starting treatment. Hopefully your family will be able to come together to support you and each other, but don't be afraid to let them know if you are struggling with any aspect of this situation.

If it would help to chat things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Keep in touch Jax27 and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Sending my very best wishes,
