Chemo - taste buds have gone after 1st session. What should I eat or drink?

Just had my first chemo session. Another 5 to go before operation. Im on day 7 after chemo and taste buds have gone. Still managing to eat. But any tips on what to eat or drink would be appreciated. Feeling abit tired. Has anybody come out in sore red spots??

  • Hi Sam

Ive not had chemo taste loss but I did get it from radiotherapy to the jaw. There was some taste left but no flavours just a dirty salty metallic taste to everything including water. I found that sparkling water was good because of the mouthfeel of the bubbles. Also easy to swallow highly aromatic foods were tolerable as I still had some smell. Be sure to include fruit, vegetables and wholemeal bread / pasta/ rice in your diet to protect your bowels.

  • Thankyou so much. I will try the sparkling water. Very strange feeling not been able to taste things properly.

  • It is awful losing your taste but it is temporary, mine took a few months to return and probably 6 months untill taste fully recovered. Just bought the supermarket own brand water 6 X 2litre pack. If you get a disgusting taste in your mouth, buy a very small spray bottle from the chemist, buy some Organic Food Grade Sweet Orange Oil 50ml or Lemon. (Used in baking cakes) Fill bottle with water and add one or two drops of the oil. shake it and spray inside your mouth, it will freshen it and the smell is nice. Something like https://www.healthysupplies.co.uk/orange-oil-food-grade-10ml.html but Ive seen it in the supermarket for much cheaper. Just make sure it is food grade and pure and not mixed with other oils like sunflower. I hope this helps in some small part to get you through your chemo.
